Wifes 2008 Malibu Hybrid Air bag message

Took the car into the dealer for regular service because of a noise.  I will update with the mileage in the am...

The front struts are seized and making the clanging noise. To replace both front struts and alignment $959.00 + tax

Also found intermediate steering shaft seizing. To replace intermediate steering shaft - $383.00 + tax

Found left front outer tie rod is torn- needs replacing. $119.00 + tax

Total for all repairs - $1,461.00 + tax

$1,650.00 incl. tax estimate

and we added another item:

concerning the airbag fault light it needs the sensor module replace- $ 1,113.00 + tax

Wife is very happy with this car and we should get it repaired.

Has the factory mags and we are always having to check the air pressure or have the individual rim take apart and cleaned up.

Car payments are foreign to us.

Comment?

It sounds like a lot to spend on an older car, but what could you buy for about 3 grand. If the car is in good shape its probably better than buying a used car that you dont know the history of.

If the car is solid and the engine/trans is in good shape I'd fix it. Some folks are paying over 500 bucks a month for 84 months on a car payment...

We owned a 2006 version of this car with the 4 cylinder engine - bought it new and put 180,000 km on it - never had any issues with the engine or transmission - I have to admit there were a lot of front end repairs on it - my 3 kids all learned to drive in it - it probably bumped into a few curbs

The air bag repair is quite a nasty surprise - I wonder if this is a spinoff of the Takata air bag issue

If it is showing no other issues and the body is good I would keep it

Car has 120,700 km

Body is in nice shape except for a slight deviation into  the curved underground garage  exit (my bad).  Buffed out nicely..   Car was ordered from dealer with 2 month delivery time for the Hybrid.

Wife says it is her last car.  She was born 1935 and is a firecracker walking each day for 45 -60 minutes indoor climbing 4 flights or just cruising the sidewalks in good weather.

Any thoughts on just leaving the air bag, ignoring the message

You can leave the airbag but keep in mind it won't deploy in a crash. Any fault disables the system.

Geez this is a hard pill to swallow. Don't you know any guys who can fix the problems more economically, buy the pieces your self  say at Rock Auto. I thought we all "know a guy"

Your first sentence is a giveaway. " took it into a dealer"
Thought we all knew once it's out of warranty avoid the stealership.
Ray has the right idea you need a corner garage.

Many corner garages can't fix airbags. They can do the other items however.

The air bag thingy didnt get fixed.  Will do some more research.

The rf headlight works intermittently since I had the dealer installed them.... LED lights I supplied.

Because the front bumper has to come off they were looking for $200 to check it..  I have seen videos where they open the front splash cover to get to the bulb.

I have a friend from years ago that I will have to visit for that one.

So   New Struts, one tie rod end and alignment.             Should be good for another 5-8 years.

Cliff, these vintage GM cars suffer from poor steel quality bad design and mega rust issues. I hope you get six to eight out of it but I seriously doubt it my friend.

Cliff, visit the US NHTSA site and check for an airbag recall on your car. This is a public site and has tsbs and recalls on file. While it is a US site, many of these items apply to Canada too. Another place to check is the book Lemonaid by Phil Edmundston, check at Chapters or the library. There may be issues about airbags listed there and with either check, you may get a free dealer fix since this is a safety issue. All the Takata recalls should be listed in one of these places.

The Takata recall wouldn't trigger an airbag light coming on. The issue with the Takata bags is metal shrapnel hitting you in the face when it deploys. It's a design fault.  The airbag system is made up of a multitude of parts- sensors, harnesses and the bag itself. You could check for a recall but it won't solve the light issue.
