Daughter had a fender bender

Our 20 year old had a minor bender today. She ran into a woman who was turning right at a light. But stopped. You know the drill.

Daughters (our) car is a 07 accord. Not too good of shape. Hood is crunched, left lamp and fender. Basically ran under the new Crv.

No room for cash deal as its a lease, we understand, and the woman has been good.

Question:

Do we keep quiet about our own car ?

Or do we see if it can be repaired by insurance?

Are we setting ourselves up for grief if we disclose, or will it not matter as well be dinged by this anyway as it will be an insurance job for the other party?

excuse me if there are mistakes here, Im typing on a phone.

Any thoughts or help as to how this works... I have no idea... no accidents in a long time.

Thanks , Mark

Has the time frame expired for reporting the accident? If the other car is repaired by a body shop they will know who pays.

I had a minor bump when my foot slipped off the brake and ended up settling for cash. No insurance involved although we did exchange insurance info.

By no ways an expert but thinking it wont make any difference if you add getting your car fixed as the insurance company is already involved. Just a difference in amount that they pay out just like it could have been with the damage to the other car. 5g or 10gs, still just a claim. Only reason for a person to hold off on repairing their own car through insurance is if you dont want it to show up on your vehicles accident record.

Basically in Ontario an accident is non-reportable if damages do not exceed $2000.

Insurance is mandatory however it is your insurance and you get to decide if you want to make a claim not the insurance Co. Insurance is really to help you in the event of a catastrophic event that you would not be able to or want to pay for.

I have a story which is completely true. Same scenario with my son when he was 18, ran into a new Jeep with Mom and Baby in vehicle. Crunched our old Buick hood and grille car totally drive-able as was Jeep. I called the other party and they didn't want me to settle the damage they said they were going to reporting centre.  Given this we went to our centre but I chose to go at 12:30 am. We get an older police officer at desk, he's wearing an OPP sweatshirt and blue jeans with his badge on a necklace around his neck. We strike up a rapport, he reads the report Ryan completed  says lets look at the car which we do, go back inside. He looks over at the insurance desk and say to us, don't even go over there, stay away from them insurance is for you not them. Now Ryan you have to pay more attention and promise me you are not going to get in another crash like this, to which Ryan says yes of Course, then he says fine, Turn around and walk out of here as he rips up Ryan's report and tosses it in the waste bin. Oh by the way, take Ryan up to Standard Auto find a hood and grille and get him to repair your car, it will be a good learning experience for him. Which we did.

So I'm taking Ray that your insurance still got tagged for the other vehicle's repair though.

Never heard a thing, never saw a claim, Ryan's record remained impeccable.

Of course that was twelve years ago, the world has changed quite a bit since then and no cop would dare invoke privilege at this level anymore.

Wow! It's so different here. Although cash settlements are very common, all insurance companies require that you report "anything of significance that might affect their assessment of your risk", or words to that effect. This definitely means that, if you do a cash deal - even for a minor bump - and they find out, at the least your next premium could be loaded. They can also refuse to cover and, even worse, may refuse to pay out a future claim.

They kind of consider not telling them is fraud, even if you were not at fault.

I should say that the collision was minor, and nobody reported to the collision center. Both cars drove away. Ours got the worst of it.

it is the hope that with us not reporting our damage that it could be a non issue.

the other party does have our info and will be relaying it to their company

I can't recall the ceiling here for not reporting an accident. I know years back it was $1000, but I think now it's $2000 or maybe $3000? Anyway, we are required to report to the RCMP above that ceiling. If we don't we can be charged with failing to report an accident. I don't know if our insurance company (all our auto insurance is handled by Autopac, the provincial government agency.)

I don't know how it works in Ontario, but in NS if she will be making an insurance claim, her insurance company will be fixing her vehicle, and then coming after your insurance company for payment of damages.  If she starts to have neck or back issues they will be coming after your insurance company.  So either way it's in the system.  Not sure what benefit you would get from not reporting, but again maybe it's different in ON.

Here in SK, you absolutely must provide a statement to SGI, unless neither party wishes to claim damages.

My 19 year old daughter recently had an incident, where the other car was significantly damaged, but hers was not. Both parties submitted statements. It is entirely the registered vehicle owner's choice, whether to submit a claim for damages or not...

We chose not, because the age of the vehicle and its book value would instantly deem it a total loss. The other party did proceed with a claim, which has nothing to do with me or my daughter. (The other party is insured regardless.) The incident does reflect on my daughter's driving record either way... with penalties of course!

true that their own insurance pays for the damage to their car but at fault driver pays the deductible , for this your insurance will charge you an at fault accident
