Is that ever nice, not what I was expecting to see when I opened it. What a look.

Darryl, the term "Bat wing" was a term that was started by a fifties Chevrolet expert in Lubuck, Texas. For the 1956-1957 Chevrolet dual quad triangle shaped oil bath air cleaner. Bill Clement of Lubuck, Texas named that and for the life of me, i do not understand why. The "Bat wing" air cleaner on the 56-57 Chev dual quads does not look like a bat at all. Chevrolet never named it that, yet this guy Bill Clement back in the late 1970's named it that and it has stuck ever since. Go figure. confuse

The term Batwing is applied to both styles of air cleaner:

I had the "pleasure" of meeting Bill Clement at Chevycraft, his shop in Lubbock in about 1981. I won't say any more about him because it's good to respect those who are no longer with us. I'll just say it was an experience.

Yes, the Olds-style air cleaner is very commonly referred to as the batwing.  I don't know the origin of it, perhaps it dates back before the Chevy guy, but it's been known as that 'forever'.

The Cadillac in the photo above is a work of art.  Note that these dual quad 'bat wing' air cleaners were not a GM-only item, as shown in the pic of a Chrysler 300 below:

Carl, i never met Bill Clement but for many years i heard the same negative stuff from folks in the 1955-1956-1957 Chevrolet world. I have no comment because i have no facts.
