This rare vehicle brings back memories...

This van is for sale in Saskatchewan. It is identified as an English 1953 Ford Thames panel van. These were among the early vans with the engine between the seats, a precursor of the Ford Econoline, the Dodge A100 and the Chevy Van, all of which bowed between 1961 and 1965.   I don't know if the year is correct but I recognize the van.  When I was about 9 or 10, we had one of these, a 1959 Thames Freighter with only 2 seats and a push button starter behind the driver's seat. Ours had been a Canadian Tire delivery van. With a 4 cyl engine and a 3 speed manual trans it was not powerful. But it was good enough to take the family on summer holidays in 1966. We had a tent for camping, but for seating we had an old couch in the back of the van. Unfortunately it was not tied down, so it slid around a bit. But it did the job.

These had the same engine as the Ford Consul. I think that they started building them in 1957 or 58. When I was a kid there were a couple in my area along with Commer and Bedford vans. All these English vans are rare now. They didnt tolerate Canadian winters very well.

Yes the Bedford had sliding doors. The only thing that rusted worse than English cars were the French cars. A business here had Renault vans here in the sixties. They didnt fair well at all.

According to the brochure it was rated at 58 horsepower, which isn't much but it beats the VW with 30 or 36.  I've still got the 1962 brochure with the Thames 800 Freighter & Mercury Econoline pickup that was given to me in 1969. I have seen a Thames van on the road, however it must have been 45+ years ago. The VWs, Chevy Van 90 / 108, Econolines & the A100s were all more popular. Ever see a British Commer van? I remember a new one in Hamilton back in 1970 with a caravan (camper) installed on the back half, predating the trend in North America by a few years.

Back in the 60's & early 70's I remember British cars were well represented in Canada. They used to have the import market wrapped up, except for a thing called the Beetle. Then the Japanese blew in like a storm while the British descended into labor issues. You can bet there was sabotage, a friend's father in the mid-70's had a Jag XJ6 with all kinds of extraneous holes drilled in the trunk & underbody that they should never have let off the line. I remember hearing the stories of sabotage on the Firenza that essentially made the car unsalable in mid-72. That is why it was dropped and the Astre was released in the Canadian market for '73.

I haven't seen a real life Thames van in Canada since we had ours in the late 60s.

But the very first time I was in the UK a number of years ago - where I saw very few vintage cars on the road - I did see a green Thames van of this same vintage. It was outfitted for commercial work, driving near Heathrow airport. I was amazed to see it still earning a living for its owner.

I've watched a few vintage films of PEI and it seems the British cars were quite popular on the island. I can only imagine how bad they'd have rusted here.

I noticed that also. There were quite a few (for PEI) English car dealerships here at one time.

The same was true in Newfoundland up through the 60s. I suspect that the onslaught of Japanese imports in the early 70s, combined with the domestic manaufacturers' refocus on even smaller cars (Vega, Pinto, Chevette, etc) and the enduring success of the VW, marked the end of British presence in the small economy field.
