Hemmings Article: RHD 1966 Parisienne convertible in England

What started out as a chronicling of the liquidation of MG Cars and snagging memorabilia ended up with the author snagging a rare RHD '66 Parisienne convertible.

I always liked the cost cutting by GM Canada in the 60s. All of the full size 65 to 69 or 70 full size cars built in Oshawa had right hand drive 1965 Chevy dashboards. The cars converted in England or Australia had modified left hand drive factory dashes.

Paul, i guess you could look at it as cost cutting but it is also far far easier to do and why add to work when there is a far easier solution. In England and Australia, converting the original dash to right hand drive is called............. necessity. What else are they suppose to do, when they have a left hand car and you want to make it a right hand drive. Cheers.

It is funny, both the Chevrvolets & Pontiacs 65-68 used a RHD 1965 Chevrolet dash. On the earlier RHD Chevrolets & Pontiacs 1961-64 they used a RHD 1961 Pontiac dash.

Cam, why is it funny. It just makes total sense to me.

Sorry, I guess I am too easily amused, but I don't mind. wink

I just thought it ironic that the Chevy could have the Pontiac dash & the Pontiac have the Chevy dash.

The Canadian Mercurys had Ford dashes & interiors numerous years.

In the end it all works in the grander scheme of things. Obviously these car company executives then knew far more than we know now. I think. wink

And I'm so glad they did what they did!

The RHD dashes werent actually a cut down 65 chev dash. They were a specifically made fibreglass unit. The speedo cluster was also a specifically built unit. chromed plastic. Looks similar but shorter due to not housing the radio. I wish they could have done better.

would love it if they had done a classic VIN search to find out how rare. 49 made for mine and as just recently posted, 2 for 68.
