Typical Canadian Poncho guy, 70 SS Acadian Kevin is a nice guy

So I posted here recently about my friend Abe wanting to find someone in the Port Colburne area to look at a 1948 Willys pickup project. Immediately this guy named 70 Acadian SS (Kevin) pops up to volunteer. I told Abe I had a volunteer and put him in touch with Abe. I knew little about Kevin, other than his posts on here and I figured he might know what he was looking at. The truck was from Arizona and was a complete shell with no engine or transmission, so rust and bondo were the biggest concerns. Actual familiarity with these old pickups was not needed.

The seller was not a computer literate fellow and initially had no pics, then put some strange ones up that were kind of crappy. I was starting to think this was a scam ad of some sort.

Abe has a rusty old parts unit here but was looking for a good body and also for the motor vehicle registration as he had nothing for the old one he had, this unit fit the bill.

Abe has looked at 10 or so of these in Canada and most he found that he liked were in the west, by the time he was able to check them out, they were sold. And most were anywhere from $7,000 to $30,000, projects to finished trucks. This one was $3,500 and the ad seemed to be what he was looking for and the right price. Abe was told it was at a scrap yard and he gave Kevin the details.

So Abe and Kevin communicated and Kevin was a bit busy and couldnt go quickly, in the meantime Abe had a neighbor who had contacts in the area who said hed get someone else to go. So Abe called off Kevin as he was scared he would lose this good deal.

His neighbors contacts ended up not working out and in the meantime this guy Kevin, who Abe didnt know and was just some Canadian Poncho guy Don found, took it upon himself to go see the Willys anyway. However, the scrap yard was closed for the week.

Kevin advises Abe of his visit, Abe was very impressed with Kevin going after being called off, and Abe decided this guy Kevin was a great fellow. He contacted the seller again and found out he lived next doorish to the scrap yard, was home all the time, and the Willys was there too. After advising this to Kevin, Kevin goes over to see it.

Abe gets a call from Kevin after the visit, gets a bunch of pics of the truck, decides immediately he wants it and says to Kevin, how can I get this thing bought. Kevin says, you already bought it, I gave the guy a cash deposit for you.

Who does that for some stranger from several thousand kilometers away? I was mightily impressed and Abe keeps saying can you believe this? while laughing.

The seller doesnt do etransfers so Kevin got the money from Abe, paid the guy, got the paperwork for title, picked the Willys up and took it to his house. Its there until a shipper picks it up. Oh yeah, they may need a tiltload to load the Willys on a dropdeck trailer coming to pick it up, Kevin is arranging that too.

So you fellows who were coming to Kevins on the 13th were in for a surprise. Too bad god intervened with rain.

Kevin will become an honorary Nova Scotian if he ever visits this way, he is such a nice fellow. Abe has a sailboat and one of those floating dock things and Im sure he can go sailing on the ocean when he visits. Drink some beer, eat some lobster, etc.

I hope you all  enjoyed this story of the nice people you meet online, strangers who become friends via old cars and Canadian Poncho, amid all the meanness and suffering in the world in2020.

 Thanks Kevin.

I'll post pics.

Well not a surprise to read a story like this about Kevin. He has set the bar very high for being a great car guy and making that extra effort. We are privileged to have him on this forum. My mom even experienced the generosity of Kevin and his wife earlier this year. She was still talking about it when I visited her a couple weeks ago. Good on you Kevin.

thanx for the kind words guys. this was less then 10 minutes from my place and easy transaction . Truck is in amazing shape for $3500 and I know if anyone else laid eyes on it it would be gone. Both seller and buyer are my new friends. I have had a number of people on this site do the same thing for me so i am glad to help out. I wanted to keep this under wraps to the show and shine but mother nature had other plans. It will be great to see this truck finished in years to come. thanx again guys

Nice going, Kevin!

There was a guy up in North Bay by the name of John Milne (same name as my dad) that found one of those Willy trucks that was used to carry explosives. It was a flatbed with an insulated carrier for the dynamite built into the deck floor. It also happened to be perfect fit for transporting a 24 of beer through the rough. Anyway about 1975 he completely disassembled the truck, repainted, rewired & re-powered it. For power he dropped in a new Pinto 2300 cc four. Bright yellow with black bed & trendy new white spoker wheel, it was a nice truck that continued  to provide service.

That truck also inspired a family friend in Hamilton to hone in on those Willys trucks right after that. Over the years he owned pickups, wagons, even a panel. It was common to see one parked at his apartment building & you could always see a Willys visible from the 403.

I was going to phrase it differently but then I thought, "you could see his Willy from the 403" and thought, nah...

.

.

Anyway, this is a thread on Kevin. Yes, I have attended a Canadianponcho breakfast attended by Kevin where mysteriously my tab was already covered. There were also other generous people in attendance like Oshawa Cliff, I want to say JohnneeD but that is an alias, Mark (cdnpont), and Randy (abc123). I came out with the same money in my pocket I came in with & free magazines in my car.

Was that a removable gooseneck, no need for the deck truck? That willys looks small on that trailer.

RE: Typical Canadian Poncho guy, 70 SS Acadian Kevin is a nice guy-but he changed his name

IMG_8117.jpegIMG_8118.jpeg

Long overdue update, my friend Abe has the frame done, its next to the cab, fenders, and box in the picture. It will remain a 2wd, they are very rare in the Willys pickup, only made 2 or 3 years, everything else was 4Wd. This body and frame were mint, one hole in the cab floor the size of a loonie.

Thanks again Kevin
