Insuring my 96 Chevy 3500

What a pain in the ass this is turning out to be. My broker tells me I have to list it with a company that does "Commercial vehicles".

Here in PEI I pay about $600 year for our clunkers- Basic coverage with $2 million liability.

The quote for the truck is $1500! This even after I explained the truck likely won't see more than two thousand kms/year! I suspect if I still lived in Ontario the rate would be about 3 grand.

Has anyone else with a 3500 series truck run into this? Meanwhile a beekeeper I know got his Ford F350 insured as a farm vehicle for $150/year. Sadly I'm not a farmer of bees or anything else. My broker said this company he quoted me on doesn't take driving experience into consideration. Rather they determine the rate based on the number of years you've owned the vehicle! confuseconfuse

Tomorrow I'll be calling around for quotes.

I sent you a PM. Try calling CAA For quote. I had one recently from them for a 3500 with no issues.

Seems over the top. I've had to change insurance companies in the past because they carried limited product lines and couldn't accommodate me. But I did find others that could. Good luck.

I'm not sure I understand.   Are you insuring this for use on your acreage and to drive around for your personal use?  Or are you planning on using it for your business?   I presume the former.

Try the online banks insurance quotes, do they think you are plowing snow for money with it?

Ive had issues with some insurance companies with this head in the sand attitude/policies. Changed house companies, had to get a separate policy for my boat.

I'm using it for personal use. The company that quoted me hasn't seen a photo of the truck yet. I suspect I may have to remove the plow and sell it.

No luck with CAA or Cooperators. Neither will touch a 3500 truck.

Who knew? This is so frustrating for you Todd. I hope you can sort something affordable out.

I would have thought the issue might have come in to play with a dually that has a GVWR of over 10000lbs, which in most places makes the jump to Medium duty trucks, not with a single wheel truck that is usually under that. What is the GVWR of that truck and are the insurance companies taking that into consideration or are they all assuming it is a dually being a 3500?

I have GM docs on the truck and it's listed at 9100lb. I tell every company its single axle but to be honest they cut me off as soon as I say it's a 3500. I'm waiting on one more quote and if it's no better I either bite the bullet and pay the rate or sell the truck.

Could it be the year of the truck or province? Im in Ontario and asked for a quote on Monday with CAA for a 2020 3500 dually. And gave them the vin, no problems whatsoever? They just asked if its personal or business, and that was it?

Crazy , the gvw on new f250s/f150s, rams, silverados, is well beyond that? Tell them its not licensed for commercial use? Im guessing that wont work.

Try AAMunro in Stratford, they found me another insurance company when I had a stupid issue like this on my house policy.

My neighbor had a problem on truck insurance with Economical, his broker put him with Intact

Insurance companies keep buying each other up and reducing choice.

It's much the same in Ontario with licensing. My understanding is that if your truck is a 3/4 ton then it automatically becomes a commercial vehicle with the higher plating fee. I understand it's quite the fight to have it rated as only a personal vehicle.

Hey Todd,

Being a 25 years classic truck.....aren't you planning on restoring it?

Hagerty type insurance is much cheaper and  allow unlimited mileage every year for driving.

....as long as it's not being used as a regular driver.

Something to check out.

I have my 1997 suburban 8-lug diesel in Ontario with intact. Had to have it appraised to maintain collision coverages but even here in gta with collision and personal use its something around 1200 for the year. We had a 1999 Reg cab long box single wheel chev 3500 4x4 in a fleet I managed years ago and I remember it was a bit of a turd on paper sometimes.

Don't know if INTACT in Ontario is different than Alberta, but my experience with Intact here in Alberta (we had them for years)

was not a pleasant one. They are fine when no claim was made. A "not our fault" getting rear ended claim was like jumping through hoops with them.

Another claim we made when an apartment we owned got flooded by the apartment above, turned into a insurance nightmare as well.

All insurance companies are great until you have to make a claim. Gauge your insurance company by the people

who make claims, that's where get the truth about how good the company is.

Lesson learned....read the real small fine print each time they send your policy to you....maybe with a lawyer.

Just my opinion from my experience.

My experience with making a claim through Intact Insurance:

- During one of our usual winter wind storms (90-ish km/h winds), the top of a tree near the house broke off and smashed into the siding, damaging an area of a few square feet.

- They had their appraisers look at it and appraised cost to fix the damaged area.

- I expressed concern that, since the siding had faded a bit over the years, that it wouldn't match up and there would be an obvious colour difference between the repaired area and the existing siding.

- Intact agreed to replace the siding on the entire wall of the house.

- Additionally they agreed to let me use a company that I was familiar with to do the repair, which was a little more expensive than the company they recommended.

- Repair done, looks great.

So... happy customer here, and would recommend, based on my personal experience.

BTW, it's good advice for everybody to always read the fine print of your insurance policy, and ask questions if there is something that isn't clear to you.  It's in your best interest to do so.

I have one decent quote ($1000 for both our Honda and the truck) so I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm calling this morning to confirm and then get set up.
Fingers crossed!

Well I got insurance with a local insurance company. Just over a grand for both vehicles. I'm happy with that.
