Hurricane Teddy

It's looks pretty certain that Hurricane Teddy is going to hit the Maritimes on Tuesday. So far it looks like Nova Scotia will get a a Hurricane and PEI a post tropical storm.

Last year Dorion hit almost the same time and at the same strength. We didn't have power for four days. Time to fill up the gas cans and get the firewood inside...

I've been watching this one for a number of days now, and last night the prediction set it on a course for NS.  Let's hope the track changes between now and then.

The US National Hurricane Center shows probabilities for variation, and not looking super optimistic for missing the Atlantic Provinces so far...

As usual with the weather, we'll see what happens.

Statement from Environment Canada:

Tropical Cyclone Information Statements

2:31 PM ADT Friday 18 September 2020
Tropical cyclone information statement for:

Nova Scotia

Prince Edward Island

For Hurricane Teddy.

The next information statement will be issued by 09:00 A.M. ADT Saturday.

Hurricane Teddy will approach the Maritimes early next week with impacts likely for parts of the region on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As of Friday afternoon, major hurricane Teddy is currently southeast of Bermuda and is moving northwestward. Teddy will continue on its current path over the next few days before making a turn northward on Sunday. Teddy is then expected to enter the Canadian Hurricane Centre response zone on Monday before approaching the Maritimes on Tuesday.

Track errors this far in advance remain large, but the latest computer modelling suggests that the centre of Teddy could make landfall along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia late Tuesday. Possible impacts include strong, potentially damaging winds, storm surge along with pounding surf, and heavy rainfall.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre is closely monitoring the evolution of this potentially dangerous storm. Interests in Atlantic Canada should closely monitor forecasts this weekend as the situation continues to evolve.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre will begin issuing regular updates on Teddy beginning 09:00 AM Saturday.

Forecaster(s): McArthur.

Please continue to monitor alerts issued by the Canadian Hurricane Centre and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Predicted track has shifted a little to the east over the past couple of days:

I suspect the effects will be similar to Dorion which for us meant a few trees down and no power for 4 days.

We're as ready as we'll ever be. It's starting to rain and the winds are picking up. We won't see the worst until tomorrow. It's a big, slow moving storm.

Getting closer now, the winds have picked up in Halifax and the heavy rains have started.  I saw on the news that there have been waves measured at a LaHave weather buoy at 10m (33 ft!) already.  The worst of it will come overnight and into the early morning hours, though.

Here's it's forecasted track at 9AM AST:

So far, it hasn't been too bad here - there were some heavy rains and gusty winds starting this morning, it slowed down a bit tonight, but they are saying the worst is yet to come.  Been lucky with no power loss yet.  Haven't been outside to survey for damage or downed trees, but will do that when it's over and done.  Lots of leaves down though, from what I can see.

Ive had about 44 mm of rain, supposed to stop around 9am. Wind has not been as bad as expected and storm surge came after high tide. Wind direction helped a lot with the storm surge, wind was blowing off the land blowing the water out to sea. Never lost power but there are some outages not far from me.

Looks like we missed the worst of this one here on the south shore at least.

Wasnt the wind and rain we had so far the prequel? Not supposed to make landfall until 9ish this morning and winds are supposed to pick up. Take it with a grain of salt though. If they downplayed the storm it wouldve wreaked havoc, and if they over hype it then its just a crappy rainy day.

About 50mm of rain so far here. Minor winds. I'm hoping we dodged a bullet however strong winds are due later today.

It was just a couple days of "normal feeling" wind and rain on the north shore of PEI. 1/4 of the strength of last years Dorian, if that.

I went for a walk through the village early this morning, actually not bad, just a little more windy and sideways rain in the open areas.

South shore NS took the brunt of it, I guess? (even though scenes on The Weather Network didn't look all that bad).

You can't predict the weather, but you can put men on the moon.smile

Well, it's pretty much over for the Halifax region, and it didn't seem to be much more severe than your average nor'easter to be honest.  We had a lot of rain, and some good wind gusts, but nothing near what we have experienced in past hurricanes or tropical storms.  Haven't read any damage assessments, though, but it sounds like our main agricultural area, the Annapolis valley area, did not suffer much loss, thankfully.

It turned post-tropical before making landfall, and I think that helped to lessen the intensity of the winds.

At 9am, it was just making landfall to the east of Halifax:

Hurricane Teddy Sep 23 20.jpg

And by 3pm it had cleared our province and is on its way to skirt the west coast of NL.  Hope our PEI and NL members fare as well as we did.

Thanks for the concern from members in other parts of the country... looks like we dodged another one!

This had a lot to do with going from 24 C waters off of the NS shore to the cool closer 17 C NS waters. Us Canadians are cool!
