Anybody running one of these 3l Duramaxs in their pickup or driven one?

Been snooping around at a new pickup as they are paying crazy high prices for used trucks out here right now.  These 3 litre Duramaxs are almost the same horsepower as my 5.3 but of course have a bit more torque.  They also get around 30 miles per gallon.  Afternoon got a little short to test drive the two and get a comparison but wondering if anyone has had any experience with them.  I know Terry in Edmonton has one in his Colorado and first impressions were pretty good.

Ive had a urea diesel since 2012, a vw, bought another in 2017. They have awesome torque and the fuel economy in my Passat is unbelievable for the size and power. I left Ottawa and drove to Amherst on 63 liters, drove about 130 the whole way. Ive had a diesel vw since 1998.

I wouldnt own a urea diesel without a solid warranty, when the urea system has problems, they are very expensive to repair. A friend with a duramax 3500 urea truck had a fuel pump blow up, it took out the urea system, the turbo, injectors, $14,000 bill, took 3 weeks to fix after removing the cab and box.

I used to drive 40-50,000 kms, the diesel paid for itself and the performance was great. Today I drive less than half that, so my next vehicle will be gas. If you tow a lot, diesel is the way to go, if you drive a lot of miles, diesel has a good payback.

While this is off topic to your question to a degree, I hope you find it of benefit.

With all the electronics in new vehicles, I may buy a low mileage vw non urea diesel as my next vehicle.

Thanks Don. My son has the 6.6 in his one ton dually and it's awesome. Just curious with these little 6 cylinders for a pickup. I should probably just stay with the 5.3 as I don't tow enough to justify it.

I wouldn't own any newer diesel without a warranty

the new 3L dmax has a belt driven oil pump that requires the transmission to be pulled back to change, its supposedly rated for 150k miles which I will believe that when I see it

Australia is tiny diesel mad. I still have my 2001 4.0L V6 supercharged Toyota Hilux (basically a Tacoma but Asian built rather than US) as there is no alternative here to replace it, other than a 5.7L Ram1500 or the new Jeep Gladiator but both are pricey especially by the time you pay for a supercharger for the Gladiator V6. I tow a car float a bit, and the little diesels don't have the power or torque to tow in country Australia at the speed limit. They have a high torque peak but average torque is poor. Most of the overtaking lanes in Australia are up a hill, and you guessed it - tiny diesels towing big caravans cannot maintain the speed limit so you either have to overtake them or get stuck behind a moving road block! I'm talking 2.4-2.5L 4cyl turbo diesels up to 3.0L V6 TD's and we also have a 3.2L 5cyl Ford Ranger. As everyday driver cars they are fine an OK on fuel given their size, but loaded up they are fairly slow. You can modify them to give them more go, but at the expense of fuel economy and making them more fragile.
As others have said, ALWAYS keep factory warranty. Very complicated and lots to go wrong.

A BELT DRIVEN OIL PUMP! Thats the deal breaker for me. Although the serpentine and timing belts seem to last, I dont think I would trust a belt to drive the oil pump that is hidden and cant be easily inspected. On the other hand while camping last year I talked to a diesel Colorado owner and he was getting about 10L/100 km towing an 18 ft travel trailer. I agree, buy as much warranty as you can get with any new vehicle.

It always seems with these diesels all your fuel savings end up being spent on extra maintenance costs.
