If you could have any car you wanted but you would have to spend the rest of your life with it.

Now there is the catch, the car of your dreams but you have to keep it until you die. There is no wishing for a car so you can sell it and live your life on the Riviera or the Muskoka's. The car of your dreams to live with forever and there is only one choice, not multiple choice. For me it is very easy, a 1957 Chevrolet Nomad wagon, fully restored and all original with a 283 V-8 and dual four barrel's. Now it is time for every body else to dream.

I bought it yesterday, you'll have to wait until I  pick it up from the dealer next week to find out. Teaser: It's got a 420 HP V8.

Sorry folks but i forgot to mention that it has to be vintage, older, classic, antique, you know that sort of car and please please please pre 1980's cars. 1970's and older only. Let the dreams begin.

This is a good topic and one that has actually made me think kind of deeply about it, which is kind of painful.  I would focus it even more by stating that it would be the only vintage vehicle you could own, which would make many wives, mine included, very happy.

I would like to put one more assumption in there though.

I hope its OK if vintage pickups are OK to consider.

If that's the case then I was trying to figure today out what kind of old vehicle I could use everyday around northern Alberta summer and winter (if I had to) for my foreseeable driving future, one that is also comfortable enough for highway use, is easy and straightforward to maintain and was built to last. Also it has to be groovy.

So, this kept entering my brain as the perfect long term vintage vehicle that is the best fit for all those criteria.

See the source image

Why a 1972 GMC K1500 and not a Chevy? Really its just because GMCs still had steel grilles which are made to last unlike the attractive but a bit cheap Chevy grilles of those years.   The other spec is that it would have to be loaded with all the creature comforts available that year such as PS PB, Tilt, Cruise, AM/FM, buckets/console, full gauges, shoulder harnesses, eight track, but no AC (sliding back window instead) All those systems would help make it very nice on the highway but are reasonably easy to fix if they fail. (I might be convincable on the AC though.) For a power train I would ether take the 350 or the 292 with a manual tranny and and the lowest gear you could order on the diffs like 307s along with a posi. (I've never understood why people would order high number diffs on the 4x4s since you could always switch to 4 low if you really wanted to scream along at low speeds, or pull out a stump at idle.) Nothing beats a 292 for good low end power and ease of service but it may not be the best for highway trips so a bit of a tossup there.

I would go with a long wheel base fleetside to get as much cargo space as possible and as good a ride as you would get with the solid axles.

The only thing about it I'd have to change would be to lower it as much as practical as the years go by so I could still get in and out of it.

Colour would be the two tone orange for that year so I could find it in a Parking lot!

Also notice, not a computer to be found anywhere!

Now I have to start thinking about if I should get rid of all the stuff I have and just look for a really nice one of these. Hmmm.

I'm with you Ray. I've had my "Modern Classic" for six years now. (It's 13 years old as I type) Blown, injected, quad cam, 400hp Hemi V8. Fully loaded too. What's not to like? It's even appreciating!

Of course it doesn't count in this thread, but I'm never selling it, or the Parisienne of course..........

Well I finally found the car that I really wanted as it has all the options that I require in a vehicle.  Have owned many cars over the years but never owned one that had all the options that I wished for or did not need any repairs or restoration.  Yes I am referring to my 1965 Thunderbird Limited Edition Special Landau that I purchased in May of this year.  Hopefully if the virus rules are lifted next year we will be able to once again enjoy our classic vehicles.  Bob.

If I had deep pockets I would have kept my 59 Dodge Royal D500. It "ticked all the boxes" for me- limited production (D500 was built to conform with Nascar rules- 325hp 383, HD Torqueflite, HD suspension etc), was the "right colour" -black with red interior. Was numbers matching, a cool Exner era Mopar with a build sheet. At least it got restored properly. Last sighted in a classic car showroom in St.Louis:

Going by the assumption that this is only for a hobby/collector/toy car, and I still get to keep all my cars that are newer than 40 years old and won't have to drive it in the winter, then my choice is a 1970 Dodge Coronet R/T with Hemi and 4-speed.  Since this is a fantasy thread, I don't have to worry about how to pay for it either...  Colour doesn't matter as I like them in every colour.

I had one of these years ago (though not an R/T or a Hemi), but I've always loved the controversial styling, and they are great cars on the road.  IMHO superior to anything put out by the other manufacturers in its size/price class.

It is very interesting that so far no one has mentioned any Pontiac's and there seems to be more Ford's and Mopar's on the wish list than GM cars. Very interesting.

I had a VERY hard time with just one choice! I also really like Olds 442s, Studes, Hudsons, '58 Cameos, '60-'66 GMCs, etc. etc.

I agree. I cannot pick just car. I can however pick one type of car: 66-69 Chevy Caprice or Impala Custom SS427 (68/9 only) 2 door HT with 427/390 and all the performance options of the relevant year.

Do you still have your other cars, or did you sell them to buy this one ? Sweet T-Bird, by the way.

I always liked the 67-69 Coronet especially the RT and the Super Bee. The 70 model did not really appeal to me but I've had a change of opinion. Now I think they look really good, especially an RT in the right color. I'd certainly consider buying one if I was in the market for another old car.

There are so many Pontiacs I'd also like to have, and if you asked me on a different day my first choice might have been a 61 or 62 Catalina 2 door. It's actually hard to choose just one favorite when there are tens of cars I like from 1955-1975. I guess it's a good thing that I don't have the resources for a huge collection.

I would never turn down a '68 or '69 (or any '68 - '70 B body) either.  My whole life I've been a fan of more radical styling, so the '70 Coronet was right up my alley.  I also loved '59 Chevys when everybody thought they were ugly.

The '70 Coronet was the one car I sold that I really regret the most.  I should not have let that one get away.
