You dont want it too warm in there as it will really make your fridge over work.

Without getting anyone's panties overheated or tied in knots, I am not a fan of top down heaters, goes against the principles of convection. Great for cooling ie Mini Splits, cold air is heavier, how ever they are great for space savers, heating and or cooling. The basic rule of thumb for domestic heating is 5 KW for 500 sq ft of living space, again depending on the ceiling heights. and insulation values.

Those with 10 kW can easily handle a small house. ie the size of your shop for instance
BTU to kW [Table]
BTU kW

20,000 5.86
30,000 8.79
40,000 11.73
50,000 14.65

In closing, I installed a 15 k btu Mini split in my main shop, really economical to operate.

When I moved here 22 years ago, this was hanging in my shop.

004a.jpg

Propane at the time, switched it to gas.

Easy Radiant Works out of Wainfleet Ontario.

I know they are not cheap they are very powerful and cheap to use.

This unit is about 30 years old.

About 5 years ago the blower motor bearing went.

No problem, called them up and bought a new, exact fit part, right from the manufacturer.

Doug try Princess Auto they carry different styles of garage heaters and the prices aren't too bad so you can save some money for liquid refreshments!

I'm going to put a heat pump in my 17x32x20 insulated room in my outbuilding. Heat in winter, cool in the summer. Cheap to run.
My 24x32 had a Schwank radiant tube heater (20 foot). It worked well.

I can't say enough good things about radiant tube heaters. Super cheap to run, heats everything in the building, you can lay on the floor, no cold corners.

I've got a "Hot Dog " unit heater up in corner of garage, [similar to MAXX] 80,000 BTU on Nat. gas. Garage is well insulated [24x36] You don't want to insulate roof rafters or trusses as it won't breathe !!! I'd put your vapor barrier across the ceiling joists, to keep heat in but you might as well put your insulation in now, then barrier I also have a ceiling fan on low blowing heat down. I had heat tubes installed in floor but haven't hooked that up yet, but garage is easy to heat & takes no time at all to get it up to 65F from 50 F that I keep it at when not out there. So well insulated that in summer it's like having A/C if you keep doors closed. Have ridge vent, and those shields that go in between rafters to let it breathe from soffits!! There.s my 2 cents

Figure out a garage cooler whilst you are at it! I have the opposite problem. Winter is great, lowest I ever see is 13degC (55F). But summer can see 45degC (113F).

I have been thinking about walling off a small section of my shed so I can put in a small aircon so I can work in comfort in summer.
