A farmer near me had a 1962 Chevy three ton with a 261 six. It didnt have an oil filter, so definitely the same design engine as in a car. The truck 261 in the states had a larger full flow filter with big 1/2 inch lines.

Don, do you know that this ad for this Chevy truck is a Canadian ad. American Chevrolet trucks offered the 261 in line six from 1954 to 1963. They were mostly put in full size school buses and dump trucks. They were an extra cost option to the 235 six in the U.S. trucks. I do not know if they ever put 261 sixes in Canadian production trucks.

I think this would be a question for our very own resident GM expert, Cam. Cam if you are out there, any insight into this 261 in Canadian trucks question.

Chevy light-duty trucks (1/2, 3/4, 1, 1.5 -tons, series 10, 20, 30 & 40 respectively) generally offered just the 235 six & 283 V8s through 1961. For 1962, seemingly to prime the market for the upcoming new-for-63 next generation 230 & 292 sixes, the 261 was added to the option list. Prior to that the 261 had only come in 2-ton 60 series (previously 6000 series back to '54 which introduced the 261).

Funny thing, Ford did the exact same thing later, in 1964. In prior years it was 223 six or 292 V8, but for 1964, again seemingly to prime the market for the upcoming new-for-65 next generation 240 & 300 sixes, the RARE 262 was added to the light-duty F-series option list. Prior to that the 262 had only come in 2-ton F600 series and C550-C600 tilt cabs mid-61 through '64. A rare one indeed.

The 261 with pressure oiling, partial-flow filter & hydraulic lifters was a Canadian-Pontiac exclusive, 1955-62. It was the Chevy truck six but for the hydraulic lifters.

Everything said for the Chevy light-duty trucks also applies to the Canadian GMC light-duty trucks. The U.S. GMCs used different "Jimmy" sixes (248 / 270 / 302) depending on tonnage, then did the whole 60-degree V6 thing starting in 1960 (305 / 351 etc.)

And I assume the 292 started in 1963 then?

Yup!  Funny enough, the low-compression "truck" 283 was rated at 175 gross h.p. while the 292 six was either 165 or 170 in the early years, yet when you see the net h.p ratings the 292 produced 153 easy net h.p. although it dropped to 125 by the late 70's.

I owned a 1959 GMC half ton short box fleet side 6 cyl 3 on the tree. Owned it for a little over a year bought it in 1976.Paid $500 bucks for it. Had a floor starter. Always thought it was a 261? Im ashamed to say that I dont even have a picture of it. Wish I still owned it.
