RE: Engine test stands?

I was wondering about an alternator but I figured shove it, I'll just find a belt the right length and crank it on there.

I'm going to use a Dodge ballast resistor, I just won't tell anybody what it's from... I was thinking I'd make the connectors for the ballast resistor in such a way that I can either run the power through it or else pull the wires off the resistor, plug them together and then I'd have 12 volts for an HEI or any other electronic ignition setup.

Hmm, I hadn't thought about being able to crank without starting. I might have to add a switch for that. I like that idea.

The oil and temp gauges I have are mechanical, so that's easy. And I ordered a cheap Chinese tach so will drill a hole in the panel once I have the tach here.

It looks a little less rugged with black paint on it. This shows where the control panel will be and shows how it pivots (different from one pic to the other). I'll weld the tube for it onto the stand but for mockup it's clamped.

I did "print screen" and saved them. Now they should. Can anyone see them when I originally posted them or does everyone have the same issue there, they don't show?

Constructive criticism...

Now that you are showing where you panel is going, I can now remember trying to find a spot for mine.

Considering in front of the rad, I figured that it was just too far forward, and would take a long harness loop to reach the devices I needed connections to. Not to mention I didn't want it near the fan.

Also, make sure the block sits at a slight upward incline, as in the car. It'll keep the carb level. Maybe it is, but the photo hides that?

Looks great in black though! More "bought" looking, less "scrap" lol!

All comments welcome, constructive or destructive!

Yes, it's angled, I guess I used a trick angle to hide that!

I didn't want the panel at the back because of the exhaust but as you say, the fan is also an issue. I don't mind if I have to make a longer harness for it, I think it's still worth it.

Well, thanks to all you guys who gave me ideas for this stand, I got to try it out tonight. I'm posting this with permission from our member "Winnipeg" (Kim). I just finished up his 230 and tonight was the maiden run for the 230 as well as the test stand. Bitter wind outside so I ran it in cramped quarters in my bay with the hoist (I can isolate that bay from the rest of the garage to prevent the fumes from getting into the house).

Happy to say, the engine runs nice (although I have to chase down a rear oil leak, either rear main or pan gasket) and the stand worked marvelously!

Hmm, interesting. It's 2 Youtube links, and they work for me. Are they not working for anyone?

It's so nice to have a proper stand isn't it Carl. Engine at a proper height. Looks great and that six sounds really nice.
