any tips on preventing rocker rust on late model GM trucks

I have a 2008 Colorado  - on the rockers it has a series of drainage holes with rubber plugs - for this past summer i have taken the rubber plugs out-

for the winter i am wondering if i should leave the plugs out to ensure drainage or put them back in

if I put them back in I am wondering if i should spray something inside the holes first - I have seen some recommendations on line to use one of the rust check type of products or perhaps some heavier weight oilIMG_1733.JPGIMG_1734.JPG

I would spray the rustcheck "coat and protect" it comes in a green can, or a mixture of both the red and the green.

If you dont want to go "environment friendly"  then get heavywieght chainsaw oil.  it works!

Fliud film is excellent as well, but very pricey in comparison, it does work tho!

Without a doubt get some kind of rust preventative spray up in there.

Here's a good comparison of some product for your viewing,

I'm a fan of Fluid Film. Inherited a 2005 GMC with no rust 4 years ago, been hitting all the body seams (door, hood, rockers, brake lines, backside of both bumpers). Use 2 to 3 cans a year, like other sprays, notice the creeping at all the points. Live in Michigan and 4 winters, no additional rust. Use it on my other vehicles also.

I've had my 2006 GMC Rustchecked since new. No rust. Yes, doing behind the bumpers is very important on these trucks ... I've seen many with rusted out bumpers.

I agree with all the above comments. I've used Rust Check as well as Fluid Film and have had excellent results with both. Here's a dumb question: What causes cab corners to rust? Water getting inside or is it from crap blasting the outsides during the winter?

I deal with the local company that has been doing this for 45 years.

I have been a customer for 30 !

I think every vehicle should be professionally shot with oil at least once.

I don't think they really need to be done every year.

For the first time a vehicle is done, you should remove anything that's in the way.

That rear spare in trucks should come out.

I stripped the rocker cladding, plastic engine shields on my wife's Escape When I first got it oiled.

I even took the rear 1/4 inside panels off so they could soak the wheel wells from the inside.

I don't do this every time I oil.

8 years later, it was time to do this again.

Those rocker covers were filled with sand but the steel still had oil on it.

The long time employee commented today that he does not see many of these Escapes with original rear 1/4 like mine.

Nice part of having an older truck is that you can see others that are rusted and know where the problems are.

That's my 2 cents !

Nice truck, out west or not, oil it smile

That's exactly right about seeing a vehicles rust issues after a few years. You can see where the spray foam went in.By then it might be too late to save your own.Best to remove any panels and lights before you spray.

I asked the owner of the auto wreckers I visited yesterday if he ever brought in rust free sheetmetal for the older trucks (before Covid that is) and he said "Not anymore, body shops want late model sheetmetal as the factory steel is now paper thin". So sad given what you pay for a new truck these days.

I have used both Krown Rust Proofing and Rust Check.. both work well just need to make sure the person applying the product knows what to do.

I usually have a little chat with Him first and an extra personal $20. tip helps...
