Do you remember the Eaton Viking Brand

Not to hijack the Simpsons thread but that thread reminded me about the other catalog department store in Canadian history.

The T. Eaton Company Limited, commonly known as Eaton's, was a Canadian department store chain that was once Canada's largest. It was founded in 1869 in Toronto by Timothy Eaton, an immigrant from what is now Northern Ireland. Eaton's grew to become a retail and social institution in Canada, with stores across the country, buying-offices around the globe, and a mail-order catalog that was found in the homes of most Canadians. A changing economic and retail environment in the late 1900s, along with mismanagement, culminated in the chain's bankruptcy in 1999.

Eaton's pioneered several retail innovations. In an era when haggling for goods was the norm, the chain proclaimed "We propose to sell our goods for CASH ONLY In selling goods, to have only one price."[1] In addition, it had the long-standing slogan "Goods Satisfactory or Money Refunded."[2]

This house in Alberta was ordered through the Eaton's catalog !

I have a little piece of this history.

MTD built, the same unit was sold by several different stores.

My brother has my dad's Mastercraft, branded rototiller.

My motor is busted but the great thing was that a Canadian Poncho had the exact replacement motor to sell me for the rebuild.

I have a 1959 Viking outboard, exactly as pictured in this ad. If I recall correctly, it's a Johnson.

My Mom worked at a Eaton's catalogue outlet (Cobourg ON.) for at least 8 years. We had ALL Viking appliances (in harvest gold), gardening/lawn machinery, vacuums, etc. etc. She got a discount. I still have an 8 horse B&S Viking tiller like yours, but older, that I call "Killer Tiller"smile The compression is pretty weak, but it still runs.

Both catalogues also served as shin pads for some of the early hockey players. Eatons order office also was where my mom was employed before she married my dad and so their house was furnished largely through Eatons when they were got married. So today she could easily tell you every piece that she purchased back during that time in 1953. Those 2 stores had a huge market share for many years.

During the time between grade 11 and 12, I worked in the Mail Order Room on the 11th floor of Terauley st running the IBM computers. During the day about 6 women toiled away on the IBM 024 Keypunch Processing the mail orders on a 20 minute schedule. My job was to collect the key punched card and sort them so the orders would go to the proper departments. On night we decided to set up the accounts receivable program and go for a coffee break. The machine would churn out the statements until it ran out of paper. On our return to the computer room we could hear a fluttering of paper Once in the room we saw all of the invoices exiting the open window. Rushed over to the machine to stop the rapid paper exodus. Leaned out the 11th floor window to see a collection of invoices littered all over the parking lot. Scurried to the parking lot to recover what we could. Fortunately a dry summer night with a light wind. Some people did not get a billing that month. Went back after grade twelve and stayed on for a few months. Eventually going too Massey Ferguson on King st.
