Put bore and stroke to the new one Carl. It the cheapest way to grunt.

The crank will be the cost.

I really can't use a ton of power running on stock size 14" radials. And I actually enjoy it being very close to stock, I'm a bit of a purist with just a touch of hot rodder thrown in.

942 block, 2 bolt but I was lucky and found one stamped for a 4 speed (not restamped). It has to be from either a Canadian Pontiac or B body Chevy (no VIN stamping on the deck and it's never been decked). Apparently the US blocks had a VIN on them. The fluke of a lifetime getting the right block for the FAKE_66.

Likely about 15 times out, maybe 500-600 miles, about 7 litres of oil. hmm

is that why they are called 7 litre engines now, nothing to do with cubic inch.

LOL, certainly in this case it is true.

I'm surprised how little most guys drove their cars.  Unless maybe they didn't have the summer we did. It was one of the nicest summers I ever remember. We spent some time at the lake, me even more than my wife because I built 2 decks. That's part of the reason I drove so little but if guys were home there's not much better summers than this to rack up the miles.  Although no cruise nights/ car shows certainly threw a wrench into things.

Oh cool Randy, that was a good get together, safely outside. And of course the trip with mom was a memory maker for both of us for her 100 year celebration. Ill tell her she hasnt been forgotten by the fellows in Ontario. She is still frustrated that it took her so long to take our picture with Marks phone.

guess im not in the loop Carl, whats going on with the 427 ?

When I built this engine I said it was likely the last engine I'd ever rebuild. I figure in my life I've done at most 15 engines. Never had a bottom end fail, never had an oil burner. This one went the first 50 miles perfectly, never burned a drop of oil. I dropped the break in oil, drove about another 150 miles, still never used a drop. I often check my oil and from the 200 miles mark to the 325 miles mark suddenly it was about 1 1/2 quarts low confuse

Topped it up to exactly full. Next morning, got up early, did two trips back and forth to our dealership just to test it. That's about 62 miles at 60 mph. Down about 3/4 of a quart in 62 miles. Weird.

Kept driving it off an on all summer, sometimes just around town, sometimes out on the highway giving it a good licking. Doesn't smoke at all. Tailpipes are a bit on the black side, same with the plugs, some plugs a bit more than others but they aren't wet, just dark. PCV hose is bone dry inside. It runs absolutely beautiful, no knocks, ticks, nothing even on a cold start. Sometimes in an evening when I drive it 20-25 miles the oil level really doesn't change, next time it's quite noticeably lower for the same distance.

I'm building another 427 this winter, then swapping it into the car and will tear down the 2 stroke 427 when I get time.  The "new" 427 will share no parts from the old one except the carb, distributor, water pump, exhaust manifolds. All the pieces that could possibly relate to the oil burning will not be used on the new engine. Different block, heads, cam and lifters, valves, intake manifold, everything different on the new one.

One suggestion is it could be the intake not sealing and I intend to try some testing to eliminate that before I pull it.

It's all good because I didn't put enough cam in it anyway so now I'll get a chance to correct that. I just won't have a nice "matching numbers" 1966 427/390 horse 4 speed B body block stamping like the one in the car now. My next build will be using a 454 block to build a 427.

Hard to believe it doesnt smoke, thats a lot of oil. Where could it go? Compression check? No oil in coolant?

Rings not seated or a mismatch of gaskets. A head scratcher for sure Carl.

Any progress on your 64 Darryl? You have such a great project car there, it will be nice to see it back in circulation.

I put a fresh set of rings in a slant six once in a customers car back in the seventies. It was good for about a month and started using a lot of oil. I pulled it apart and the rings on one piston moved until the end gaps were lined up. I dont know what caused it, but I moved the rings around to separate the end gaps and put it back together. It never had a problem afterwards. I also had a customer that did his own work and decided to replace the valve seals on his Chevy. He came in for a ring job because he said the valve seals didnt fix it. I pulled the valve covers and the valve seals were installed under the valve spring retainers, not under the keepers where they should be.

Maybe 6-7 times... decided to take my boys out for a few Lockport return trips later this summer, sadly that was more miles than last year! With kids this age, the car seat dilemma slows the cruising down a bit...I should really look into shoulder belts for the rear seat.

Short answer, Not Enough! About 3 Sunday cruises and a half dozen trips to work. And a nice fall evening drive for a CP coffee meet. Just something about +30 temps and a black car with no A/C, it's not as fun as it used to be, so the bulk of the summer it sat.......

I haven't had a chance to use my Pontiac in the past few years, and this year in fact I did not drive any of my old cars. Too many other issues to deal with over the summer.

I did however have some time to work on one car over the winter and spring. Hope to get back to my cars this coming winter.

20200829_135016.jpgThe best part of this summer was the last half for me.
It rained some much this summer it was hard to get out.
Plus the old 55 was grumpy, it took me to four starter's to finally find the right one. I definitely spent a few bucks on gas once it stopped raining and found the proper starter. I probably put on 1500 kms.
