Its the bypass valve above the oil filter that is bolted to the engine block. If you could see the other side I think that you would recognize it.

Yes, any cannister type filter on the V8's has it.

If you have a spin on filter, it has a spin on conversion. There are2 types of spin on conversions available, one uses a Ford spin on filter, one from a 5L Mustang, the other uses a gm filter. The Ford spin on filter has a bypass built in so this part is not needed with that type of conversion. The conversion that uses the gm filter needs this original bypass part.

The spin on filters all seem much smaller than the canister elements (which I'm still using). Does this make them less efficient or are the spin on filters somehow filled with more filter surface area?

 Size (surface area) does matter.

 The original canister filters filter more.
