Alex Trebek, Another Great Canadian, Passes Away

Alex Trebek, the host of game show Jeopardy! since 1984, passed away from pancreatic cancer Sunday.

He was 80-years-old.

The official Twitter account of Jeopardy! posted Sunday afternoon, saying Trebek was surrounded by friends and family when he passed away.

From Wikipedia

Trebek was born in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, on July 22, 1940,[5][6][7] the son of George Edward Trebek ( Terebeychuk),[8] a chef who had emigrated from Ukraine as a child, and Lucille Lagacé (born April 14, 1921), a Franco-Ontarian.[9] He grew up in a bilingual French-English household.[10] Trebek's first job was when he was 13; he was a bellhop at the hotel where his father worked as a chef.[11] Trebek attended Sudbury High School (now Sudbury Secondary School) and then attended the University of Ottawa.[12] Trebek graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in philosophy in 1961.[5][13] While a university student, he was a member of the English Debating Society. At the time, he was interested in a career in broadcast news.[14]

Sad news. I thought he was doing well. I lost a friend to Pancreatic cancer in 2017. He was 62 and a very active, healthy eating guy. You just never know.

Did you know Alex Trebek's hobby was collecting the inventory from old hardware stores?

Howie Meeker once held his hockey school in London Ontario.

I remember the buzz around it.

His name was even on the arena for a little while.

Then the arena was converted to a health club and then torn down a few years later.

It's been 4 1/2 years since I lost my wife to pancreatic cancer. She went 21 months once diagnoised and was 58. Alex was diagnoised last March so I make that 19 months. Once it presents it is usually Stage IV so people live with it for some time without knowing. This disease is a death warrant at that point, no turning back and so little research is done. My wife was walking around in the kitchen 20 minutes before she died so to me its no surprise Alex was able to record shows as recently as October 25th. God Bless him, he was ceratainly cherished in our household.

My friend was less than 6 months from diagnosis. For the first 4 months he thought the diagnosis was wrong as he felt great. He and his wife did a cross country trip in their motorhome.
