Canadian snowbirds find creative way to get to Florida – with their cars – despite border closure

https://www.fr24news.com/a/2020/11/canadian-snowbirds-find-creative-way-to-get-to-florida-with-their-cars-despite-border-closure.html

Until a few weeks ago, Canadian snowbird Diane Rood and her husband, Theo, were unsure if they were going to be able to make it to their Florida winter getaway this year, given crossing restrictions linked to COVID-19 . the border by car.

I have arthritis. The idea of staying in Canada with our cold and wet weather just seemed inconceivable, she said.

The couple from Lambton Shores, Ont., Who still travel to Florida, considered taking a commercial flight. But that would mean not having a vehicle when they arrive. Plus, they would have to ditch their beloved black Labrador Abby.

After listening to his mothers reproaches, Jeremy Rood, a helicopter pilot with Great Lakes Helicopter in Cambridge, Ont., Contacted a friend, Greg McClay, who operates a commercial trucking company, GRM Transportation, in Dorchester, Ont. . It turned out that her grandparents faced the same dilemma.

After some brainstorming, they found a solution.

McClay took the personal snowbirds vehicles across the border in his flatbed truck to Buffalo Airport, while Rood transported the owners of the cars as well as pets across the border. from the border in his helicopter to the same airport. Once disembarked, owners could simply get into their vehicles and be on their way, driving approximately 2,000 kilometers of road to Florida.

It solved all of our problems, Roods mother said on Monday.

It was as smooth as silk. Within minutes, we were out of the helicopter and to our car.

Since they recently announced their solution on the Canadian Snowbirds in Florida Facebook group, Rood and McClay say theyve received hundreds of inquiries. Theyve made a handful of trips already, and as of Monday afternoon, 35-40 more trips have been booked.

It was an exceptional year. We have a roadblock that has been put in place. But there is a way around it. We are doing this to get people there, so they can enjoy and be healthier. It makes me happy, said Rood.

Its not a loophole, he added. We are just operating within the means of the system.

Rood said he checked with US officials beforehand to make sure everything was legal.

Its totally permissible, he says. Americans welcome us with a smile. They are happy to have us.

Asked for comment, U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Jason Givens asked the Star to review travel restrictions in the United States.

These regulations currently restrict entry into the United States through the land border to people on essential travel. This includes those who need medical attention, go to school or work in the United States, public health officials, truck drivers, and military families.

Essential travel does not include tourism purposes, such as sightseeing, recreation, gambling, or attending cultural events.

The current restrictions are in place until at least November 21.

After The Star insisted on getting a more direct response, an American customs officer replied: If a Canadians vehicle is legitimately imported into the United States and the Canadian arrives by air, it is not considered a violation of travel restrictions.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control did not respond to a request for comment. Representatives from the Canada Border Services Agency and the Public Health Agency of Canada referred their inquiries to their US counterparts.

Currently, Rood and McClay charge their clients $ 1,900 $ 1,200 for the helicopter flight and $ 700 for ground transportation. They are currently flying from Hamilton to Buffalo, but are looking to add another route from Windsor to Detroit.

We had hoped to finally spend a good amount of time in Arizona this winter. My wife's disease symptoms greatly improve in their climate. However, both of us agree it would be a terrible decision to go there this winter. We easily could, we have always flown and rented a car which is still allowed. Our winter is planned out for us and it consists of me in the garage and her either at work her one day a week or at home the rest of the time. I think US travel right now is foolish. My two cents.

I didn't post this as a positive or a negative on the situation.

Just how far people will go the re-establish what they see as normalcy.

I didn't see any problem with it at all Ken. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same way! Hopefully the rest of the people who read it felt the same way.

Interesting as a similar situation has been going on for a few weeks here in B.C. Good friend of mine here in the valley has a buddy at the coast who is a licensed broker for transporting vehicles across the border. What he does now is to take your coach or your fifth wheel to Seattle. You just fly ahead to Seattle and pick up your rig there. $1500 a pop and sometimes he is doing 2 a day.
Up to a week ago we were pretty much planning on going for at least a couple months right after Christmas as Ive got a car done there already. We could get insurance for the 2 of us for 2 months for $750. 2 million Covid coverage and 5 million other stuff. Our mind changes almost every other day now as the numbers ramp up. I know Id feel safe once down there but no swap meets or car activities. Will see, I can be happy either place.

Not sure I would be wanting to go down there right now. I realize some people have been doing it for years
and that some do it for health reason, BUT, is it worth the risk of possible being exposed to more people with covid
and possible getting it? It's messed up world right now, it would be a tough call. One would still have to get groceries
and stuff, so going to store etc.

I own a mobile home in Florida but will not go until the border opens. We were in Florida when covid started and all flights were cancelled. After consulting with both US and Canada customs we were allowed to drive our Florida car licensed and insured in Florida back to Canada without having to import it. The conditions were we had to cross at the border closest to our home and park the car and do not use it in Canada upon arrival at home. The other condition was the car has to be returned to Florida when the borders open within a reasonable time limit.

When the borders open we will head south very cautiously and upon arrival quarantine ourselves for two weeks in our mobile home and yard. We will also purchase health insurance with Covid coverage and follow the same procedures we are already doing at home wearing masks when grocery shopping not going to restaurants and bars etc.

I have severe ostio arthritis and my pain level is much less in the heat .

Unfortunately some of the snowbirds have no winter home in Canada. I have known people that live in their motorhome year round, not good in the winter and others that sublet in the summer and their apartment isnt available during the winter. A bad situation during these times.

A very sensible approach, well planned Al. I'm surprised (and impressed) that they let you bring your car home like that. Often it seems like any concessions like that would be denied because of rules. I wouldn't even have thought of asking to be allowed to do that!

My wife would love to have the pain relief the warm dry climate gives her but it sure doesn't look like it will happen this winter.

It surprises me a little that people would go to such trouble to circumvent the rules, which were put in place to protect our population from covid, in order to go to the world's hotbed of COVID-19.  Insurance or not, if you are one of the people whom it hits hard I can't see it being worth it.  There are also many instances documented of resulting long-term health problems brought about by covid - I still don't think we know everything we need to know about this disease as it hasn't even been a year since the first outbreak in China.

I hope for the best for those people, but I really hope they don't bring the virus back to Canada in the spring when they return.  I don't see the US being able to do much with it for a long time, vaccine or not.  It's blowing up again in Canada, but I still see us having a better chance on beating it down than the US, since it has gained such a foothold there.  It would suck for Canada to have lowered its numbers by the spring only to have it blow up again due to all the returning snowbirds who cheated on the rules.

Just voicing my opinion, of course, no offence intended to anyone.

Agreed MC, and I still stand by my quote above. However, I watch my wife suffer on a daily basis and I am torn in half, it's risk vs. reward in our (her) case.  We have discussed going there and living in isolation just so she can have relief. Watching her on a bad day really makes me want to take the chance and find relief for her.

We usually go each year for two weeks to florida. If I was a snowbird I think I'd still go and use the same precautions as here. Basically not much additional risk there if you're keeping to yourself. Also there might be the added bonus of getting a vaccine 6 months sooner than here.

Of course everyone has to make decisions they're comfortable with this year. My friend just sold her florida house and there's no way I'll be going to disney fir a year or two.

It's not the Armageddon down here, that you'd expect if you're relying on the Canadian Lamestream Media for information, but the cooler weather has resulted in hospitalizations, and deaths, to spike, all over the place.

Including the Great White North, albeit from a much lower baseline.

We sold our Florida digs, and rented a place down there for Jan-Feb, but are having misgivings, and have alerted the landlord that we'd like them to try to market it to someone else. NC has been relatively moderate in statistical terms, but our local health care provider is on the verge of being overwhelmed, despite having a recently-abandoned, fully equipped, hospital that they've reopened exclusively for Covid victims.

Whether you're in Inuvik, or Key West, the best thing to do is avoid exposing yourself to other people, beyond what is ABSOLUTELY necessary. We felt pretty vulnerable when we went down to clean out the Florida house, last week, and are awaiting test results, but so far have had no symptoms.

As the CEO of the dominant local health care provider observed, earlier this week, "...we are doing this to ourselves...". It's past the point where elected officials can do anything to contain it - it's every man/woman/undecided for ourselves.

True Chris. The Genie is definitely out of the bottle.

It's now a numbers game; The more concerned people, choosing sheltering, using common sense, maybe even trusting in basic science, vs those running around thinking everything is fine, and that it cannot possibly effect them.

I suppose any of our ideals would change when one of our loved ones get sick with this horrible thing. I know mine would.

But once the hospitals are overwhelmed, then maybe attitudes will shift.

So far so good on my families side...

We now have community spread here in PEI. It was announced yesterday that a high school student has it. It sounds like he works at a restaurant and convenience store so they are advising people who visited those locations during certain times to monitor for symptoms. He also plays hockey. This could get really bad really quick. It has me a little concerned as I am truly running the company I work for which means spending at least 2 days a week delivering product to area grocery stores. While it make look like all the precautions are being taken in the front end of the store, it's completely different at the back end. No masks being worn by the receivers (even though several trucks a day arrive with drivers from out of province). The carts we use to move our product from truck to the shelves aren't being cleaned.
I drove by the testing facility in Charlottetown and it was packed with cars lined up trying to get in. This could be a very long winter.

I got an email middle of the week reporting the first positive case in our resort in Palm Springs and now received one today saying there are at least a couple more. Pickleball is shut down and who knows how long golf and tennis will be okay. Hockey and car events aren't happening there so hardly any reason for me to go now. Buy some parts for the truck and get at it in the garage.
