Canadian snowbirds find creative way to get to Florida – with their cars – despite border closure

Our next door neighbour is in charge of the hospital medical staff in our little town of 1800. He tested positive Wednesday I think it was. Thursday his 16 year old son gets brutally sick, went for testing Friday morning and should have results tomorrow but chances are very high he has it, he has almost all the symptoms.

We don't see our kids, stay out of stores except to pick up the mail/groceries and I go during the slowest part of the day for that. Winter travel plans are cancelled, we don't even get to see our kids and they are only 15-20 minutes away. Mother in law is 95 but lives on her own still, don't dare go visit her because there's no doubt COVID would be a death sentence. It was pure fluke but I don't think I could have picked a better time to retire. Locked in the garage for the winter other than time on the exercise bike and outdoor walks (away from people).

A friend of mine passed away of COVID-19
She was in the hospital for something unrelated and caught it there in an outbreak. She contracted double pneumonia about a week after covid and passed away about a week after that. I reached out to her husband, who was getting tested, her 20 something daughter caught it visiting mom... so they couldn't be there. Told me they were watching her take her last breaths for 2 days over FaceTime. If it weren't for covid she had no reason not to walk out of there.

It's devastating. Death, but also the trauma of the family not being able to be there. Just horrible.

Sorry to hear about your friend Andrew. Scary times for sure...not being able to see the enemy!  Think I am at high risk being a delivery driver. I have to go to 20 customers a day and some of the shops have 40 employees or more! Most times I leave the truck door open and put my gloves on the floor before entering. I also wear a mask and have hand sanitizer in the cab. Not 100% safe...but you do what you can and use common sense. I also date and time the invoices myself. Lets hope we call all get back to a normal/safe life soon!!

You mean, the difference in the weather isn't enough of an incentive, in itself, Jerrel? biggrin

Our old 'hood in SW FL was MUCH more cautious and sensible than we find folks here in NC.  I would think the "newlywed and nearly dead" demographic in Palm Springs probably has more responsible residents than in places with a more representative cross section of age groups.  The "I'm young, so I don't need to worry" attitude is a big part of the problem, they bring the bug home and infect older, more vulnerable relatives.

 Sorry to hear Andrew.

One of the reasons why I'm putting off having my right shoulder checked out by a hospital . I'll put up with the pain for now.
