In Ontario, they require the title and bill of sale.. Seller should have no problem in providing you a title unless there are hidden issues.

Now that I think of it, from what I know Alberta doesn't use titles and the other provinces recognize this when you go to register the car.

I bought a Fleetwood in Alberta about 10 years ago and it seems to me I had no trouble getting it registered.

We do have titles here in Alberta, sold a car to Waterdown Ont. about 6 weeks ago, buyer required both items to register after locale inspection.

How long have you had that system? When I got that car it came with a bill of sale that was a blank page copied out of your local Auto Trader that had all the buyer/seller information filled in.

Unsure of Manitoba regulations, we can sell on bill of sale to each other here in AB, I believe a few years ago Sask would do a transfer on AB bill of sale unsure if they still do, but not BC, Ont, PQ and I think Maritime provinces as well.

so if you bought a car in your province with a bill of sale you could not resell that car to someone in Ontario?

Kevin, maybe ask your motor vehicle people, they should know.

Nova Scotia has 2 documents now, a title document needed to transfer ownership plus a plate document carried in the vehicle. Here, if you buy a vehicle on a bill of sale, I am told you can get a title but you need to have a police check of the VIN/serial number.

Maybe get a copy of whatever plate document the owner in Alberta has, if they ever had plates.

No not correct, about the maritime s

I live in New Brunswick and when I bought my Beaumont in Alberta back in 2010.  I got a bill of sale, which I remember the vendor going to a provincial office to get,  and along the bottom of this invoice a specific statement read that this bill of sale was intended to provide the buyer title for the purpose of acquiring registration in his province.

Wayne, you buy and sell cars a lot more than I do, but I've never heard of us having titles here in Alberta.   When I sold the green/gold 2+2 to Hillar back in 2009, we just utilized the Bill of Sale form that the registries provide, after downloading it from the Service Alberta website.

Yes we did just a few years back. It was a S-Show but in the end the simple solution was getting an affidavit made up of how we got it etc. And it was a done deal. No titles on unfit vehicles in Alberta

I guess the word should have been registration, so use to dealing with our American friends title is the term we use frequently. As there is now no place to sign over the registration on the back like it once had, we now use the AB bill of sale along with registration if owner has it. Hence now in any sale done now, I use the word title. Unless Out has recently changed it's motor vehicle act, you need proof of ownership be called registration/title along with bill of sale. I would not buy any car now without registration/title matching owners credentials along with bill of sale.

I think I know where this is going and the question that was asked and I also wonder about is how you would sell a project (nonrunner) car outside of Alberta with only a bill of sale from the seller. For most older project cars it will not have been registered for a long time.

In the case of a few of my cars I know now that I'm not going to get them done so I'd plan sell them as the projects that they are. (or parts cars-which is not an issue here, really)  So is there any way that you guys know for the new owner to actually get them registered where he lives once he is finished.

I haven't sold enough project cars to be conversant with this.

Ken, in order to sell any of you project cars making them capable of Ontario registration, I think you'd need to first register them in Alberta.

I don't think walking in with just a bill of sale in Ontario will suffice to register even an "unfit" out of province car. The next owner here also would have to have an appraisal done, to move the car forward into an "unfit" ownership document.

Hmmm. Sounds like a catch 22 here in that you can't register a car unless it is roadworthy but I don't want to go through the trouble of restoring this thing myself. Sounds like I will have to part out a quite restorable 67 big block bucket seat GP with all matching numbers (one of about 300 built) which is a shame.

I wonder if I could register it as an antique at least?

I'd think it could be registered as unfit. Can be done like that here.

Never heard of that designation here. What does that mean? Sounds like something I would call myself!

You guys sure have it different than Manitoba (and Alberta it seems). I don't know of an unfit designation here either.

Unfit means it hasn't been safety inspected.

There must be a way, though AB's website is not zo clear. There is a number to call at the bottom, though.  That's where I'd start.

It sounds as if as long as you can get insurance on something and can show a bill of sale you can get a car registered. Maybe that is the avenue to start on.

I will call tomorrow though and see if I can get clarity. I hope its more fun than talking to Revenue Canada...

In Alberta, our pink registration documents used to have a part on the back that could be used as a Bill of Sale. The registration information, including the registered owner & VIN were on the face of the document. That part is no longer on the back. I may have provided that to Hillar, in addition to a Bill of Sale when he purchased the green/gold 2+2 from me in 2009.

My cop friend told me you can do the registration of a vehicle here based on the police viewing the car and confirming the numbers on the car. They also do a search of the serial number, maybe for just NS, maybe for all of Canada.

If you are selling a car, maybe go to motor vehicle and have them do a serial number search, see if its still on the system. I had one done on the 62 Parisienne parts car I bought, so he was able to do it even though it did not have the 17 digit VIN.

My suggestion is check in the buyer and sellers provinces if you dont have a registration and see if you can get a registration based on a bos. Every province is different.

I was going to suggest that as the buyer you keep a signed copy of the Alberta registration card, signed by the former owner;
Odds are that should do you good.
