How many of you usually back into parking spaces or into your garage?

Sort of interesting to watch as I had a few minutes to kill while sitting in my truck in a food store parking lot. Fairly tight lot so was impressed with how many drivers back in so that they can easily move that front end back and forth as they come in. I then watch ones driving in and trying to angle and they touch the line on one corner and the other line on the far corner. Then try the shuffle to straighten it out between lines.

Interestingly enough my wife and I started backing into the garage many years ago when our kids were small. They were not the best for putting away their toys and bikes so when I left the garage driving out I could see them. They are long gone but you will still see each of our vehicles backed in. Just wondering if anyone else is bent this way or am I the only weird duck. Two benefits for me as I like how much more mobility I have with the front end steering as Im backing and then when I leave my spot I can see all the other cars around me and whos doing what.

I back into all parking spaces and garages, so does my wife and my kids.  The main reason I back into garages us because was told to do that in case you have to boost your vehicle.  I just continued that trend and now back into all spots.   I also like to get the hard maneuvering out of the way...... so I can just pull forward when I am done.

The odd time I do pull into a parking spot when I am going to buy something large and I need to open my hatch.

i back in to parking spaces and driveway but drive straight into the garage. Starting these old cars to warm up with the tail pipe hanging out the open door is a lot better then all the fumes at the back of the garage

Always, with all cars. My long-gone father told me, when he was teaching me to drive, "you never see anyone getting run into backing into a parking space". The only exception is Costco, where I need the trunk/cargo hold pointing towards the massively overloaded shopping cart.

Ancient picture, but gives the proper impression.

And, having the noses and batteries near the AC outlets at the front of the garage makes life easier, too! smile

In the case of a curbed spot, backing in as far as you can will usually get your car a fair bit further into the spot.

So when you're gone, your front end is a little less likely to be clipped.

I always back into parking spots whenever possible, I believe it's safer pulling out forward, mainly since you can see much better. Can be tough tho, usually someone right behind you making it difficult to maneuver.

It's quite amusing to watch people back out of spots too, like the least amount possible with many not enough on the first attempt.

I have a 40 plus year habit of always backing into my garage. It is far easier to maneuver 3 cars into a garage if one backs in. I always let any passengers out of the vehicle beforehand. As far as parking spaces are concerned, it all depends on the space. Additionally, I always leave my front wheels turned fully to the left or to the right; it is all about the look. This habit has long since been a signature trait of mine. A vehicle looks awesome when parked with the front wheels turned. In fact, I even do this with my motorhome when I am out camping. Talk about a creature of habit.smile

I can back a big trailer in like it's nothing. But I still can't back the Explorer perfect in the lines. Some cars are easier than others,

Always. The pictures of my first Acadian when I was 16 always show it backed into the driveway. My wife never liked backing in to the garage but once I explained to her after we had our first child that there is a lot less chance of running over a little child she learned to back in and always has since. On the farm it was one thing but in town I also don't like backing on to a street. When I come home I can scan the driveway and check if any of the neighbour's kids are outside before I back in, I like that.

When I was a volunteer fireman it helped me get onto the street faster and safer, as stated it's easier in case a boost is needed. As mentioned, in forward sometimes at Costco to get out my wife's wheelchair and also it's easier to load up when we come back out.

I knew a man who didn't back in. He backed out of his garage and his 2 year old grand daughter was there. I still shudder to think that he lived with that for the next 25 or so years he was alive. Can't even imagine.

Am developing the habit of backing into the garage or driveway. As our road gets progressively busier it makes pulling out into traffic much safer.

Many times in larger parking lots I'll find a spot where I can drive thru to the second spot so I'm pointed out.

Like 4speed427 I have a similar story. A work acquaintance was backing up while one of her twin infant girls was playing in the driveway. Enuf said.

I always back up into my driveway and parking places except when grocery shopping or when I need to open my rear gate to get stuff in. I also don't use the back-up camera, I like to swing my arm over the right seat and watch where I'm going. This way I get a much wider peripheral vision that a back-up camera wouldn't catch.

As for my Poncho I drive forward into the garage. That's for two reasons: when I start the engine the carbon monoxide will go outside right away especially if I need to wait for the choke, and if I ever need to pop the hood open there is extra lighting in this position. I'm not too concerned about a boost because I have my own charger or I can always push the car out if need be.

Backing in gives you a better peripheral view of what is out there.  Particularly on coming traffic or pedestrians who cant wait for you to exit the spot.

While driving for Uber I made an attempt to have the passenger get in on the passenger side usually getting into the back seat.   Tried to get them to exit on the sidewalk side also.

In downtown Toronto just trying to make a right turn without having people trying to jump over your hood was a challenge.

Happy Motoring<

I back into my driveway all the time and now I'm finding that the neighbours in the cul-de-sac have started doing it as well. I also back into parking stalls if I can't drive through to be pointed outward. I find it's alot safer to pullout straight forward.

As far as fumes in the garage, both our daily drivers are so clean burning that they leave pretty much nothing for smell in the garage. My 427 is another story.... it's backed in too, 99 out of a 100 times I roll it out onto the driveway, close the big door and then start it up.

Gee we have a lot of weird Ducks here, LOL. We live at the end of our street, no thru road, so no traffic.
But I hear ya on the little kid thing. IN Winter I usually back in, easier to get a good run at my small hit in the snow, if we get any.
Lemans is usually driven in as well, except if leaving early in the morning for a show or whatever, makes it easier to push out and fire.
Back in at work though. Try and get all customers cars backed in so they have easy way out, nothin worse than having
a customer with a big bill then run into something while backing out of parking spot. So I guess I am 50 /50 parker.

I've said for years, reverse parking should be mandatory everywhere. Nothing worse in shopping centre carparks than people reversing out of parking spaces and holding up traffic.

Trimac trucking has 4,000 employees

They've pioneered safety protocols in safe driving

Backing into your stall at work is mandatory.....google any Trimac depot and you'll find every staff car backed into a stall

I don't have the studies but it's been proven to be safer....I believe a big part is that you are more "in tune and cognizant" of your driving after having driven. When you first get in your vehicle you're not.

I also believe in backing into a spot. Got my wife into the habit as well! It was mandatory at all the mine sites in Fort McMurray that I did work on.

Same here. Even if I have to walk a ways to the store.

I back into our driveway and other similar spaces (like my Mother-in-law's retirement residence).

I always back into driveway, but not for any reasons. I think your place looks more presentable when vehicles are backed inshowing front, like a presentation. Yes I know I'm weird.

Where I used to work, back-in was mandatory. But I virtually never backed into the garage at home. I find that backing into a dark garage was more difficult than backing out into daylight. When I enter the garage to drive away, I open the garage door and walk around the back on my way to the driver's side to make sure it's clear before backing out. I also cannot open the tailgate or canopy if I'm backed in far enough to close the garage door. At least when I drive in, I can get into the box by opening the garage door without having to move the truck.

In parking lots, I often back in, but I find that people expect you to back out of a stall and will stop to let you do so - often because they're waiting to take the spot. However; when I go to back into a stall, it seems to be an unexpected move and people drive or walk in behind me, or take the opportunity to drive into the stall before I get moving in reverse. I very often park a little further away and find a spot I can drive through so I can drive in and drive out.

Back OUT of traffic NOT INTO traffic. Driver Safety Courses usually teach you this phrase but NOT into enclosed space like garage or around building where there could be fresh air vents is what I and my family practice while parking.

Have always backed in. Drive for a living and back into every customers all day every day, also drive a F-350 long box crew cab! Never get out of a parking spot if you went nose in first! Pull nose in first only when parking cars in garage for winter or working on a car. Just easyer when nose is closer to bench. As for storage..have a man door at front of shop,so I can just pop open man door to check bat etc on front of car.

Happens to me all the time! I pull forward on an angle to back in (so they can figure it out) But they come up on my back bumper...can they not see my BRIGHT LED back up lights??? And yes..have my hazards on way before I'm backing into a customers to give them notice. I also cut the truck to a 45 blocking both lanes...but they still drive behind me as I'm backing up!! If I hit them......my fault,so you always have to do a triple take. Drivers should just take note of their surroundings!
