This has been a problem for a long time with the AFM engines.

So I assume it's best to stay away from these engines if doing an LS swap?

You can buy a kit or programming to deactivate the cylinder management. I havent done it, so I dont know what is required. The problem with the cylinder management is when the cylinder is deactivated, both valves are closed, so when the piston moves down the cylinder vacuum above the piston draws oil past the rings. My brother has a 2013 with AFM and has 220 K on it and it doesnt use oil. He does more highway than stop and go city traffic, that may be the difference.

I'm always amazed to hear these are so bad. Of all those 5.3's we sold at our dealership, I bet we never saw 4 come back with oil consumption complaints. I can't figure out why it's such a problem for most places and not for us.

Maybe in Morris everyone has a lead foot and the engines never get a chance to come out of 8 cylinder mode! lol

I've got a 14 but have less than 90 thousand klics on it. It has been my favorite truck that I've owned so far.

What I don't get is our 6.0 litre G8 has AFM and it doesn't burn a drop. Every time we're on the highway it goes into 4 cyl mode unless it's really windy.

After the third time of this exact thing happening to us, including once at -35 coming back late night from a hockey tournament, we traded off our 2010 Silverado.....the second time was about 800 km after a fresh oil change. I had to carry a 5 litre jug with us at all times...and ZERO support from GM on this.
