Camshaft Break-in & Recommended Engine Oil

Between work, Christmas and a little shop time I haven't loged in very much.  While doing my engine rebuild and installing the Melling camshaft I read the enclosed sheet.  I haven't done this type of work for about 25 yrs and found it interesting how the thinking has changed, obviously based on all those years of finding out what works better.  I also know the topic of what motor oil to use has been much debated on this site and thought this paper would help add some light on that as well.  I hope this info helps someone, like it is helping me adjust my way of doing things.

Probably overkill, I used Lucas 30 weight break in oil and a shot of Comp Cams additive on my 327 run in. Ensure it will start (keep the no start cranking to a minimum), pre prime, 2200 or so RPM for 20 minutes.

So far it seems the cam and lifters broke in just fine. No noise, oil is clean. I know it was expensive to do it with these products, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Any good Carquest might even have these items in stock, mine did. If not they can certainly get them.

I had a 360 AMC built to 400+ hp a few years back, with flat tappets, and this stuff was strongly recommended by the engine builder:

penngrade1.com/products/high-performance-oils/penngrade-1-break-in-oil-sae-30/

Not necessary if you've put roller rockers in the 327. They told me that lots of zinc is helpful when the overhead is being pushed pretty hard by the combustion process.

Not roller rockers rather roller lifters. Zinc is required to protect flat tappet lifters.

I use GM EOS with every change on the old cars. No zinc required if engine has roller lifters.

Curious....why not buy an oil that already has extra zinc in it instead of adding it yourself?

Strange as it sounds, I think these break in oils are actually formulated to allow the rings to seat quicker. New modern everyday oils are actually too "anti wear" to allow that to happen in a reasonable time.

I used a breakin oil from Nova on one engine and a good quality oil and gm EOS on another car and use the EOS on oil changes. Not always convenient to go to the city to get the special oils.

I bought Comp Cam 10W-30 from Nova for mine.  Here is the link to Comp Cam's site https://www.compcams.com/engine-break-in-oil-10w-30-1-quart.html which has a nice little write up.  I forgot how many hours of cleaning and cleaning and cleaning are required when you do a build.  Everything is now cleaned, ran dies through all bolt holes and tapped all studs etc. hopefully tomorrow I can get back to assembly.
