Father hopes video of unique car can help catch hit-and-run driver

Father hopes video of unique car can help catch hit-and-run driver | CBC News

Collision left London man's daughters hurt, police looking for red 1968 convertible Buick Skylark

Powell's car sustained $9,000 in damage. More concerning is that his daughter Emma, who was sitting behind the driver, has injuries Powell fears may be permanent. The pupil in her left eye remains permanently dilated, which is causing vision problems. Ashley, who was riding in the passenger side, is also now afraid to drive her own vehicle.

CBC News contacted London Police about the collision. A spokesperson said the hit-and-run remains an ongoing and open investigation. However, they also said finding a vehicle without the licence plate can be difficult in part because while people who buy vehicles are supposed to transfer ownership within six days, not all do. Vehicles sold multiple times without being registered can be challenging to locate.

It's surprising that this hasn't been found yet.

Such a unique car in a small car world. Must have been from out-of-town and is being hidden somewhere. Just a guess.

The police say it's difficult without a plate. C'mon detectives, just do a Ontario (or even Canada wide) search for all 68 Skylark ragtops.

It's not like this is a Chrysler minivan.

I agree. Can't be that many out there especially in red.

Reading between the lines.

"people who buy vehicles are supposed to transfer ownership within six days, not all do. Vehicles sold multiple times without being registered can be challenging to locate."

They may know the car but not the current owner.

I can't speak for their work, but how hard would it be for a detective to trace the line of ownership, using some basic skills and tools at their disposal?

Do a search of all 68 Skylarks convertibles. Don't worry about a plate number. Go to the last owner registered and start from there.

3 people in the car as well, this will be the break, eventually one should squawk.

I know that corner, used to go to the (then-Supertest) car wash in the background, when I was a starving student.  Obviously, this happened a while ago, given the top is down on the Skylark and the grass is green.  There had to be alcohol or some other intoxicant involved.

Perhaps some of our Forest City friends have seen it at shows in the past.  Can't be that many red 68 Skylark convertibles still extant up there - they were worthy of comment even in 1968 for their rarity!

I live in London and go to all the shows and cruise nights and I have never seen this car.

I suspect it from out of town. I do hope they find it.

Personally I see nothing in that video to suggest the driver was acting like an idiot. I see an old car probably driving around on old tires like hockey pucks sliding on a corner, just like the the police warn us about using old tires on these cars. After the accident ok bad judgement.

I see a typical rookie mistake - gassing it around a corner, probably trying to impress, the back end breaks loose and the driver doesn't have the instincts to countersteer and let off early enough.  Article said young woman driving, so maybe inexperienced.

Looks like the quarter panel came down fairly heavy on the divider island - probably some good damage to it.  Somebody knows, but is not telling...

I agree that it shouldn't be too hard to find a Skylark convertible, but in reality the police probably don't have the manpower to prioritise a search like this.  Unless pressed by political pressure or otherwise, they will likely just let insurance settle up the damages and hope that somebody comes forward with info.

It was a young lady driving. Poor handling, decent torque combined with a lack of experience and you get this.

And on top of that she probably is an idiot that gives zero F**** owing to the run away and no reporting.

I worked with a girl in the 80's who used to drive her dads 70 GTO to work. I witnessed her do the same thing when pulling out of a laneway. Spun it right around. Luckily she didn't hit anyone.
