Dave

Do you know why some of these have the "boss" (for the hydraulic cylinder bracket) on only one side, just below the 2nd bolt hole on the LHS, whereas others have the "boss" on both sides?

I've often wondered why. This one clearly has the casting knockouts where it can be left or right side fork, and also the casting to be drilled and tapped on either side for the fork pivot, yet the RHS boss is not there.

We got those same bellhousings here with the fork hole part on the LHS intact, but punched out on the other side for a RHS fork, plus the pivot ball hole drilled and tapped on the other side to this one. That is why the 3858403 cast number is on the removeable bit for a RHS fork, on ours there is a different casting number (3858404) on the bit that would be removed for a LHS fork.

I have one here from an imported (from the USA) 1968 Camaro that has the boss on both sides, but others that are like the one you have listed. Maybe it is simply a running change?

RHS fork and you can see the boss I'm talking about:

This is a 153 tooth flywheel bh, is the 404 for a 153?

153 Tooth

Did you know, 3858403 is the GM part number, and could show a 3840383 casting number

3858404 is the same 153 tooth bellhousing, identical. When they were cast they had both casting numbers on them, located on the bit that was removed for the fork to poke through. If you wanted a left side fork 3858404 was removed. If you wanted a RH side fork 3858403 was removed. The RH side fork was mainly for right hand drive but I have heard (unconfirmed) that some Corvettes also had a RH side fork. The only quirk I have noticed is some (like Dave's pictures) are missing the boss on the RHS, you can see it in the photo I put up.

Another quirk is casting number 3858404 is part number 3858402 whereas 3858403 is the same for both cast number and part number.
