Don't believe everything you read on the internet!

I read quite a bit on a Facebook site specifically for people who live off grid. It's been a big help with our off grid cottage, I've picked up some great tips.

A guy posted this a couple of days ago I guess, I just saw it tonight. I thought he must be in the NWT somewhere to be having temps like that. I checked. Nope, he lives about 75 minutes northeast of me.....  I figured NO way, we haven't even had close to -35C this winter, not sure we've even seen -25C this winter. I checked the temps recorded where he lives the day he posted this, a low of -14C that night. I blocked his name out in the interest of privacy.

So why do guys do crap like this? Why would he BS about it being -36C here, and also saying that is pretty much standard winter temps for central Canada? confuse

WHAT?!!?!??

You mean people tell lies on Facebook??

You mean I shouldnt take stuff I read on Facebook as being the definitive answer to all things??

Next youre going to tell me that those little light flickers you get now & then ARENT secret SOS messages from extra-terrestrials whove been captured by the CIA and are being held in underground crypts built by ancient giants from Uranus.

And that I dont need to burn my toenail clippings to prevent Chinese spies from harvesting them from the landfill so they can extract my DNA to create a racially targeted killer virus...

And, by the way, whats a guy who lives off grid doing posting on Facebook with a giant yard light for his uncovered wood pile?

Lots of ppl take what they read on facebook as verbatim. And, lots of bad state actors out there filling the void with unfactual information that ppl take as verbatim. Everyhting from flatlanders that beleive the earth is flat to this fella stating its -ve 35 c when its not to everyhting in between.

Stick to CP for your daily dose of factual info and you will be Ok!  wink

Absolutely, I've never read anything here that could be proven false. Except for that one guy who posts from someplace down in the lower part of Ontario. Some of what he posts is fake...

I called Mr Facebook out on it, we'll see if he responds.

I just can't figure out what could possibly motivate someone to do that.

Same reason youll hear people say:
I caught a fish that was THIS big!

This is actually a very scary issue. Going to get a lot worse with modern video editing capabilities. Flat-earthers and tinfoil hat people are pretty easy to dismiss but a video of the prime minister, or president declaring a national state of emergency will likely cause serious problems.  But what youre doing (questioning and calling the liars out) is what more of us should be doing.

Sorry for the soapbox rant, but when I hear how many people get essentially all of their news from Facebook & Twitter, its alarming.

The correct names are fecebook and twitworld. I decided pretty early on that I needed neither of those in my life. From what I have seen they have just made the world much stupider.

Read on another forum I belong to that the Chinese government has troops stationed in Vancouvers Stanley Park. Stanley Park is closed to the public because of it.

I am thankful it was decided quite a while ago to forbid religious or political posting. This has kept this forum an island of sanity and civility in my opinion.

I am also grateful to the moderators who keep this stuff from creeping in despite what they might feel personally. Kind of a thankless job but necessary.

Todd and I haD that very discussion today, agreeing that was an excellent move on his part to eliminate those 2 topics.

 Totally agree.

Another US-based car forum I used to go to regularly has a political forum, and it has become the most negative experience you can imagine.  People are flinging insults at one another, and the conspiracy theories, etc. that are continually discussed are absolutely crazy.

Thanks Todd, for not allowing this stuff on here.  Once I saw how low that other forum has sunk, I can now really appreciate the civil conversation on CP!

I agree. This is not the place for it and it is WAY better for it.

I often type, delete, re-type and more often than not, just skip a response altogether. Maybe I should do even more of the latter.
