If he has the papers for the rebuild, and a guy could hear it on a test stand the price is fair but as an unknown, you are right....

Being in the midst of an engine project I (along with many of you on here) can certainly vouch for what it costs even if you do it yourself.

I was studying the picture and it looks like this is the correct air cleaner for a 66 396 PLUS it looks like it's the rare one, the air cleaner that has the snorkel stamped with an opening for a carburetor air heat system. Look at the bottom of the snorkel, you can see a bit of a ridge there. I believe 66_GrandeGuy Ken Yackimec has one of these on his 66 also.

I think the 66 big block air cleaner may have had a running change at some point in the production to the hot air hole as the one I have on a 66 396 Parisienne was a very late production car while the one without on my 66 Grande is quite early production. That's my guess at least.

Yes, the parts books says early and late, just no specific dates for the change.

As parts guys we were taught that typically we could say early was before Jan 1 and late. Over the years I used that if I didn't know a build date and while it was not always true it worked pretty well.

Yeah Carl that setup was kinda primitive with just a pipe attached to the exhaust manifold that fitted into the hole in the snorkel. No thermo controlled flapper or any thing that I've seen.  They must have found that it warmed up faster with this setup. Not sure  how always having a mix  of warm and cold air affected the power output.

From what I was told regarding that particular casting block, GM used them for their crate motors( which all came with a flywheel- not a ring gear). I have the same thing sitting on a stand that came out of a 16' flat bottom jet boat. I'd like to see the stamp pad on this one........

I bought a complete 454 last fall from a 1984 GMC 1 ton and it also had the 14015445 casting number. Mortec.com lists it as being used 1978-1990 but doesn't say where.

Yep, my 454 4 bolt main block is a 445 casting as well, with no numbers on the stamp pad. Was told it was a 77 marine block.
