If you happen to have a 396 or 427 apart right now I would like to give you a call and ask you some questions.

Carl,
I have a 427 shortblock assy in the garage...pan is off. (I think it was a 396 crank conversion)

Gary

Same stroke, same casting number in some cases, different balancing between 396 and 427 apparently.

Thought both were internal balance engines?

with modern lite weight pistons could you get away using the 396 crank in a 427?

both are internally balanced engines.   While the 396 & 427 cranks both have the same stroke, the counterweights of the 427 cranks are a bit different to account for the heavier 427 pistons.

I'm trying to figure out the weights of the different big block components, 366, 396, 427 car and truck. SO much speculation and guess work online, I want to actually talk to people who have this stuff in their hands basically.

I want to figure out the best route to take, which crank to use to make it the easiest to balance.

Yes, all big blocks except 454 are internal.

I have most of '72 402 in pieces in the shop if that's of help. Crank is in the block and pistons and rods are in a box.

Absolutely that would help, can you PM me and let me know when a call would suit? No panic, not like it has to be today but over the next few days would be nice if it works for you.

I have a 68 396 apart in the shop. Pistons are out still connected to the rods. 6223 crank turned 20/20 sitting in a box.

Basically, if anyone has any of these short blocks taken apart, 366  396  427 car  427 truck, I am looking for the crank casting number, the crankshaft weight (digital bathroom scale), the width measurement of the 3rd counterweight from the front of the crank, and weight in grams of a piston and rod assembly including rings and wrist pin (digital kitchen scale).

Three reasons---

-I'd like to be able to identify the different cranks when I look at them (and I'm thinking maybe there are others who have an interest in this also)

-I want to figure out which crank would be the easiest to balance as a 427 car crank

-I'd like to figure out which of the piston assemblies is closest in weight to a 427 car piston assembly (quite sure the 396 assembly will be the winner)

That would be excellent if you can either post here, PM me or email me any of the above data I'm looking for. Thanks Kevin.

You'll need one of those drug-selling scales for weighing the piston and rod assembly!

The most difficult to find is a 427 car engine that's dismantled to get these specs from.

The crank is a 6223 with 3/4 counterweights. The pistons are 68 396 std bore.

Great, thanks Randy. I can't quite see, does the piston have rings on it? And also, are the bearings out of the end or are they still in it?
