Surprise during walk in the woods

Just came back home from a nice walk in the forest. I was greeted by several deer.

You either have a VERY good lens or very tame animals in your area! Cool pictures.

What a treat! Nice shots Leo.

I noticed today for the first time lots of birds chirping in my area. It's coming!

A bit of both. I have 8 cameras and 10 lenses; I love photography and video. As for squirrels they are typically friendly. Now for the deer that's a different story. In recent years they come closer to urban areas and people feed them. Then the animals are no longer afraid of humans because they associate people to food so at times they come to you! What people tend to forget is that deer carry certain diseases and we shouldn't encourage them to come closer to us by feeding them. They have plenty of food in the wild and they reproduce quite rapidly. In my case today I benefitted from the deer's docile character.

the deer are very fuzzy right now-lots of hair. We have over 20 of them behind our house everyday-love seeing them. They come and tease our dogs that are behind a chain link fence-it is actually quite funny to see them interact with each other. Thanks for the pics!

They're cute when they're somewhere else! We got so sick of them on the farm. They destroyed a beautiful cedar right outside the bedroom window one winter. I used to open the door and chase them away and yell at them that they were a useless waste of fur... I enjoy seeing them anywhere else but I sure didn't enjoy seeing them there.

The biggest animals here in PEI are Coyote's. I don't miss the near misses I had with deer in Ontario driving to work early in the morning! I have had a coyote run across the road in front of me here and man can they run fast!

Yes, those coyotes can really move with proper motivation!!

Nice pictures! Those deer look to be in great shape. Must have been a pretty mild winter for them.

Believe it or not we have coyotes right in Montreal, in the city itself. Last year I saw one climbing the front stairs of a house 200m away from mine. Some parks adjacent to rivers have large signs about cohabitating with coyotes and informing people about what to do and not do.

The biggest I've heard of but not seen was moose, on several occasions, and last summer a beluga whale on the St. Laurence which unfortunately was found dead a few days later, possibly struck by a vessel.

That's a shame about the Beluga. I remember seeing hundreds of them swimming in the Beaufort Sea near Cape Bathurst in the '80's when I worked up there. Incredible sight!

It seems many 'wild' critters are learning to live in or near cities. I see more deer in or around cities than out in the bush. Cougars are getting to be a real problem in some areas of BC. Apparently there was one lying around on the steps of an apartment building in downtown Salmon Arm last summer! We have coyotes in our yard, just on the edge of town, year round. They took down a deer not far from the house two years ago, and they got the neighbour's dog last summer. You should hear them when an ambulance goes by! And pretty much every year one of our neighbours lose a sheep or two to black bears.

I live in a town of about 1800, covering likely a bit more than a square mile. River runs on the edge of town so of course we have deer. I've walked most of the streets in town this winter and I don't think there's one street that doesn't have deer tracks on it, even the centre of town where our one lone traffic light is, intersection of two highways. The one highway is a major trucking corridor to the US but I've watched the deer just stand patiently and wait for traffic, then cross.

A seal is indeed a funny one. Funny one because it had a good ending.
