When did GM switch to 6 digit odometers?

That's six digits, plus the tenths.    A lady across the alley is selling her 87 Grand-Am, with 44447 km.   It's a digital odometer, but I didn't get a good look at it to see if there was a spot for the 100,000 digit.

I'm presuming by 1987, and especially with digital odometers they'd introduced the 6th digit.

The digital speedos in that other brand, for the 90s, showed 9999.9 then went to 100000

They used the same 6 digits for display after 99,999 kms but left the tenth off.

Our 87 Grand National only had 5 digits, and I know the new style pickups that came out in 1988 had 6 digits so I'm assuming that is when it all changed but maybe not all models changed at the same time?

Her interior is like new, so hard to imagine it being 144,447 km.

Definitely not the right cluster, this car across the alley has an electronic (LED) odometer.

Are you sure it's an 87? I had an 89 which I'm sure had an LED cluster (and it read over 100k)

The build date on the door sticker was 12/86, making it an 87.    I only quickly looked at the odometer, and yes it was LED (or as I incorrectly said 'digital').  However I didn't look to see if the odometer had space for a 100,000 digit.

I'd presume when they switched to LED they had the extra digit.

I believe they had an optional digital cluster in those years.

This cluster based on the psuedo-carbon fiber look, is 1989-1991, or maybe even 1988-1991.
The earlier cars had a muted silver gauge surround.

My recollection was that the Turbo 2.0L cars had a digital odometer.

I quite like these cars.
