The storm of the century 50 years ago today

From March 3-5, 1971 Montreal got 43 cms of snow. The link below (article from 5 years ago) shows a few interesting street pictures pictures.

I would like to see if anyone has old pictures from the 70s or earlier showing cars in the snow during snowstorms.

Before looking at your thread I thought by the title you were referring to the anniversary of the March 66 storm in Winnipeg. After a little math I realized we are celebrating the 55th year since our storm of the century. I was 10 years old but have vivid memories of our cars totally drifted over, digging snow tunnels that I could stand up in and a snowplow ploughing through a drift and creating a tunnel on the street.

We got 24 of snow and with the snow remaining from the winters accumulation and blizzard winds it shut the city down.

I remember a bad one in SW Ontario in 1977 or 78. I remember my mom walking to our school to pick my sister and I up and guiding us home as there was zero visibility. My dad barely got home from work and was stuck home for a while. I remember having to walk to the local variety store in knee deep snow to get some groceries. I think the storm lasted 2-3 days.

I was in my final year at UWO, it was the 100th anniversary of the school's founding. In the previous 99 years, they'd closed the campus 5x for a day, owing to weather. That winter, it was closed a total of 6 days. Half-tracks from Wolseley barracks were out rescuing stranded motorists, and crushed a few cars buried under snowdrifts.

Being dedicated scholars, we just started drinking, sooner.

My dad got stranded on the 401 in that one I think. Had to be rescued by snowmobile and was taken to a hotel along with a bunch of other people. I think near London. Took him 2 days to get home.

Jan '77 Mark - massive snow storm. We towed a 55 Chevy along the New York Thruway on a tow bar as they were closing exits.

Collector at a toll gate asked: "Is that car driveable?" I replied "no". He says: "well no car is allowed on the thruway

that is not driveable unless it's on a trailer - now let me ask you again - is that car driveable?"

I promptly replied "yes sir" - got two toll tickets and away we went. Later on we got snowed in at Syracuse and had to

wait it out for 12 hours. Pics are from a day later at a rest stop.

Feb 2004, storm got called White Juan, about 100 Cm and winds of 125/150kph, temp was well below freezing so snow blew around big time. Power out for 5 days. Pics were of my Dakota 4x4, Passat, and beetle. Snowblower had a good workout. Juan was the name of a hurricane we had in September 2003.
