1965 Laurentian Front Running/Signal lamp resto.


Took the front Running/Signal lamps out of the 65 in an effort to find a small job that I can occupy myself with (I love these jobs). They are working fine, but look pretty grungy, the hope is the sockets are still good enough to save.

Bought some 1157A LED's for them on Amazon. I'll do a before and after to show how they look condition and lighting wise.

 

Now the question; Would Anyone happen to have any good 65 lenses to part with. Mine are just fair, both yellowed, paint stained and one is cracked.

Again, they can be found NOS and probably repop no problem on eBay, but thought I'd ask here first as I've been very lucky doing so in the past (thanks guys!).

Right/ 5957206, Left/5957205, one year only PN's. Not sure how I'll approach the gaskets, as I think they really need to be white as to not show as dark through the lens.

It's hard to judge to light output as in on camera. But as expected, they're still more than adiquite. This is the running filament. Signal side is still very bright.

Go to home depot or hardware store,  rolls of that foam door and window foam seal.   there is one that is a tight cell white color,  it works fantastic to making gaskets for lenses.   way better than buying the repro die cut stuff,  you can double it up and it crushes nice for a water tight seal.

what?  hardware store parts on a restoration. blasphemy!  . hey dont knock it,  it works!!!

Yeah it is called sill gasket. You may want to check various stores as there is a variety of thicknesses made. Some is almost useless as it is so thin while some is almost 3/16" thick. Great stuff to work with.

Grungy is an accurate description. Will you dip them into metal rescue and then dry coat?

They will show the pitting after but should clean up nicely.

Thanks for the sill foam idea guys, That should work perfect.

As for cleaning them up, I'm lucky, I have a decent blast cabinet with glass bead. If I didn't, I probably wouldn't take these on.

Blasted. Painted,

Used aluminum silver for the bottom coat with a dusting of gold for that cheesy FakecadŽ look. White flat primer on the inside.

Cleaned up the bolts. The lenses surprisingly came up decent enough to not really need replacing. I used some rust remover on the rust stains caused from the lenses being in contact with it for so long. Finished up with some plastic lens polish.

Just got the 1157A Led's to the door, so I just had to try them out. They look great, I'm impressed with em'.

The only issue...I'll now need a LED compatible flasher.

 

I'll call it done but for the seals. Cheers.

Next up; Taillamp bezels and trim.

I put LED's in my 68 but left two original bulbs in the back so it would work with the existing flasher. I thought I had ordered the correct flasher that would work with all LED bulbs but I didn't get the correct one.

Got the lamps in. Yep, they're bright alright! Signals are as much brighter again, so you'll not be missed.

The running's make nice DRL's, (as always, the camera makes it more dramatic than it really is though). One suspects you might still read the road at night if the headlights were to crap out. But I'm good with all of it. Cheers.

That looks good. In PEI cars older than 25 years have to have the headlights on all the time - but I suspect those park lights would pass muster.

Nice job!

Was the original reflecting surface white or silver?  I would suspect it was silver, but looks like it could be white in the "before" photos.  Probably just the way the camera deals with contrast, but I thought I'd ask...

Flat white Mark. My thought is that flat white kind of fluoresces and glows a little more than a reflective silver. Not that it matter with these bulbs.

The Transtar 2 in 1 white primer is perfect for the inside. Any white would work, I just happened to have this handy, and the low gloss is perfect. Just like you might see from the factory.

Dynamic brand non smudge aluminum from princess auto is a fantastic paint. The best aluminum spraypaint I've ever used. Instant dry, great coverage and the can seems to last forever. 

And then Gold Rust-Oleum as a top dusting over the aluminum silver. Any flat look gold would work just fine here if that's the look you'd like. A car show judge would laugh his arse off at the whole thing, but on my level of car, it's perfect. Cheers.

If you alternate between the rustoleum gold and silver metalic, it gives a nice representation of the cadmium plating. Problem is you can't clear over top of it as it will dull drastically.  Nice work above!
