What is this electrical thing?

Found it crimped into the rats nest of taillight wiring in my 65. Says TP-101 on it.

Any ideas?

Just guessing but did the car have a trailer hitch?

No hitch. And no evidence of one in the past.

Looks like it could be a noise filter for a car stereo system. Could there have been an aftermarket sound system in the car at one time?

Yes, there was an aftermarket stereo in it.

What made me think trailer was the yellow and green, the two colours for left and right signal on a trailer. It totally made sense for that to come out of the tailight harness.

Yes. With no trailer tow package, no trailer brakes, no seat belts, probably kids in the trailer too. Maybe a 6 cylinder wagon too and single master cylinder. biggrinbiggrin

Ah yes, the good ol' days... wink

No ideas on the electrical box, though.

Most trailer light converters that I see online have wires in and wires out, and some kind of connector for the trailer.

It has the correct number of wires for a stereo noise filter, but why would it be in the taillight harness?

So it's a Idunno for now... smile

And the thing is, those converters are only required on a car that has a separate bulb for the signal light and brake light. On our 60's cars they aren't needed because we have a bulb that does both. It just doesn't make sense that it's a converter for trailer, yet the colours are correct.

Carl, just a quick question and hope I haven't skipped over the answer..... cdnpont's is a 65 but does your 66 by chance have something like that as well hiding up in the wiring? Didn't your 66 have evidence of a hitch at one time? (I could be wrong on that thought)

The black 66 Grande Parisienne had a hitch on it but I don't know that I ever recall any evidence of a hitch having been on this one. And I've poked around in the trunk of this car without seeing anything like that. For that matter, I've never seen anything like that. I'm convinced it's not a GM part.

Converter for a high mount stop light, that sure looks like it could be. And the wire colours make sense. It just didn't make sense for a trailer though.

That's a TP-101A, Mark is dealing with a TP-101.

(I'm being as critical as some people on a Facebook group I'm in. I think we have a winner)

Yes, indeed, Robert - good eye and memory. I wish I would have noticed this post earlier. I, too, recognize the module from the third brake light. Back in those days, I remember following all kinds of vehicles that had this light added to the rear parcel deck. All too often people did not know how to wire this brake light correctly or did not bother to use the module. I recall countless cases where this third brake light would flash with the left or right signal light because the installer did not follow the directions for wiring the module correctly. I still have a couple of these lights in the garage.
