From driving.ca News Roundup: A Jeep explodes behind an RV, an F-150 falls through ice | Driving

A Jeep owner who failed to properly set up their Jeep for towing has inadvertently demonstrated what happens when an engine is forced to revolve at eight times its red-line rpm . The video showcasing the damage starts off like any normal 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon vehicle tour, but when the mechanic gets to the underside of the Jeep, he spots the very obvious damage.

Apparently the owner hooked the Jeep up to tow behind an RV, but left the vehicle in the 4-Lo setting, which produces the 84:1 crawl ratio thats great for off-roading. When the RV got up to highway speed, however, that 84:1 maths meant the engine was spinning at around 50,000 rpms, which caused it to literally explode. Whats even wilder is how the driver of the RV didnt notice the eruption at all, though it was likely accompanied by some smoke and fireworks.

Imagine the trail of debris it left on the road for miles.

I once was driving on the 401 and came up on a RV pulling a car, and it was pouring smoke and making a super loud whining sound. I pulled up on the RV and my wife started frantically gesturing back at the car. It took the guy a minute to figure out what we were telling him before he pulled off. Clueless.

Why was the engine turning at all? And surely the drag must have been huge - Im surprised the motor home managed to pull it - and that the tires on the Jeep didnt just skid along.

Standard transmission? I assume an automatic wouldnt leave any drag on the drivetrain? I could coast start my 59 powerglide.
