I watched it a bit earlier this evening and shut it off halfway through. Jay normally does a very good presentation, but missed the mark this time. Kept going on about it being a 401 engine, figuring it should be the same as his Buick Grand Sport. He didn't think the 442 emblem painting was correct. Jay just needed to familiarize himself a bit more with the car.

But, the car is beautiful.

Oh dear, I'm worried about Jay, he's 70 now and he's losing it.

I can't beleive they released that episode because Jay was clearly having an episode.

Like Clint, I couldn't watch it anymore.

Yes, it's like he just pulled it out, desperate for content, not knowing too much about it.

But still, seeing the car in motion was worth it wasn't it?

The car itself is nice. I knew more about this car when I was 10 since I never was without a sales brochure or Motor Trend in or on  my desk.

Jay is out to lunch, he's got to get someone fact checking his stuff if this is the quality it has dropped to.

"1966 is my favourite year......wait NO its 1932 yada yada yada"

He says '66 is last year before Federal Regulator ruined cars with safety regulations but he's not really right. 1966 was the year that Congress created the US Department of Transportation. Then there was the passage of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act which established an agency to set safety standards for all new vehicles beginning with the 1968 model year. That was the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration under the DOT. This all resulted after 1965 saw 50,000 US traffic fatalities and Ralph Nadar hit the scene exposing the US auto industry's unsafe products.

Interesting statement... I wonder why he feels that safety standards are a bad thing?  My 20 year old self probably wouldn't have blinked an eye at it, but my 50+ year old self sure is glad to have them.

Regardless, if you look at US traffic fatality data through the years you can see a downward trend from the high numbers of the muscle car era - notably dropping from the 25 - 26 deaths/100,000 population in the mid-late 1960s to 20 - 21 after 1973, which coincidentally was when the national 55 mph speed limit was legislated into existence.  While there will be a lag in fatality reduction due to safety equipment/improved construction because of the time needed for the older "unsafe" cars to wear out and be replaced with newer "safer" cars, the 55 mph limit probably masks the real effect of safety equipment.  Anecdotally, after some time had passed, less people payed attention to the 55 mph limit, and chose to pay speeding tickets rather than drive at such a painfully slow limit, and in 1987 the national speed limit was raised to 65 mph and the national limit was repealed in 1995, allowing states to set their own limits again.

Through all that, fatality stats continued to decrease, showing that newer technology such as airbags, crumple zones, electronic "nanny" systems, etc. were showing their worth.  By the mid 1990s fatality levels were in the range of 15/100,000 population (quite a drop from 25 in the 1960s), and from the 2010s have hovered in the 10 - 11 range.

I think he's under some stress lately due to some jokes he told years ago.

Makes sense as the world appears to have collectively lost its sense of humour lately.  I'm wondering if we will even have comedians in a few years time.

Well my son and I were actually discussing the situation with comedians. For the most part they turned into partisan political commentators in the past 5 or 6 years, now they have lost their raison d'etre.

Look up some older you tube Videos of Johnny Carson Show if you want to see funny.

Stand up comedians have been pushing the envelope for as long as there have been stand up comedians, and it looks like it's time for a reset.  Which is fine, I'd be happy to go back to the days of Harvey Korman and Tim Conway, as that is real humour to me (though my impression is that most young people would think that type of humour is 'stupid' - but I could be wrong).  It's just weird to see Jay Leno have to go back and apologize for jokes that he told years ago, that were considered to have the requisite 'edginess' of the time, when it was considered socially acceptable to do so.

That's all... just seems weird to be judging what somebody said in the past by today's standards.  That said, I look forward to a reset and for the world to take a fresh look at itself and hopefully heal and improve.  Regarding comedians, to be honest I hadn't found many over the last decade whom I thought were truly funny, so I'm hoping we all can learn what actual humour is again... I could use the laugh.  smile

I read an article a flew years ago about a guy whose dream car was a 1970 Chevelle convertible. He couldnt afford to buy a real one so he brought an Olds Cutlass and put 1970 Chevelle sheet metal on it. It was a bit weird seeing a Chevelle with the Cutlass dash and interior.

Are you familiar with Jim Gaffigan?  Clean humor, family focused.  Not for everyone, but I find him funny depending on my mood.  Lots of his clips on YouTube.
