Just got an unexpected offer on my car

I was off and about like usual when someone came up to me to ask questions about the car. So far all "like usual." He asked me to pop the hood open, looked at the interior, asked to sit down & to make a long story short offered me 18K for my car for immediate purchase.

I'm wondering what member's thoughts are on this: 67 2+2 rag with a 305 instead of 283, powerglide, power windows, antenna, tilt, headrests.

I guess it depends on your attachment to the car and future plans? Its likely you couldnt replace it for that kind of money. Sellers remorse can be painful but you know what they say, when one chapter ends, another one opens. Ive had people sniffing around my 67 Chevelle that hasnt seen the road in 22 year. Ive told them its currently not for sale at any price.

For me, it would depend on the bodywork,

Paint condition should be considered.

$18 could be an offer with a flip in mind.

From past pictures I have seen of your car, I personally would not take less that $20.

It's spring and the value of convertibles goes up when the roof goes down !

However you are the best judge. The hassle of trying to sell it may not be worth a small gain in money.

WE don't judge here, just as long as the decision doesn't keep you up at night.

My guess would be if he offered 18 you could at least get 20. He has made a good offer to get your attention and obviously is serious. Make a game plan. Beautiful car with probably only the 305 being a negative to quite a few people. If your time is up with that car you will have a great starting point for something else but... you probably know this car pretty good.

If it's a good solid car and decent paint, a Pontiac convertible seems to be worth 20K these days and you do have some nice options on it.

My take on it is that if you weren't planning to sell, then don't sell unless the offer is too good to refuse.

If you were, then consider if it's near what you would be asking and go from there.

Just met with the potential buyer. He wanted to negotiate and offered cash right away but I walked away.

I felt a certain sadness and uncertainty about selling the car, which led me to realize that unless the $$$$ is higher the car stays with me. Also, when I told my wife about it she asked me ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO SELL THE CAR? I'm not mentally ready to sell it. I enjoy the car very much, I know how much money, work and effort I put into it as well as how much enjoyment I get out of it and want to continue on. A classic car is part of my life and if I would sell it I would need to replace it ASAP.

So the car stays with me... and I will sleep well tonight!

Agree. Sounds like he wanted it for less than he offered. Unless its rusty (which I'm sure it isn't), it's worth $20K  or more at any time.

Plus you want to keep it so why sell? you don't want to suffer that seller's remorse thing.

I find it hard to sell cars ... but once I decide I never look back, even when a chance arises to buy back one I used to own.

Your wife is a wise woman.  My wife has done the same a couple of times. She has flat out told me "You will NOT sell your car until you promise me I won't hear any whining in the future that you shouldn't have sold it".

When its time to sell, youll know and you and Carl should always listen to your wives, sounds like they know you well.

If you were planning to replace it immediately, youd be real lucky to find anything with everything done like your car is for $18,000?

What Don said.......smile......and never take the first offer.

The fellow that imported my 66 Impala in the 90's has been calling me once a month w/o fail

trying to buy it and for good $$$. But I know if I sell, I will never own another similar (relatively rare) car.

Your car being a ragtop is worth a good deal, when the top goes down, the price goes up.....biggrin

The car is not rusted, it's solid everywhere. The paint is not showroom perfect but looks perfect from 10 feet away. Same with the top. The chrome on bumpers is new showroom condition. Everything including all gauges, clock and power antenna work on the car so that's an updated description.

I enjoy the car very much, just wish it had more power but then again I take care of it and wouldn't push it nor abuse it. I think that now unless I find another toy first I won't consider selling it unless the offer is too sweet. But then again, like my wife said, I really have to think about it because it's the first car both my kids ever drove, the model my late father had as a first car in Canada and also my dad was the only person outside of my household that I ever let drive the car. The sentimental value is there and I'm sure CP members understand this more than anyone else.

Correct. I don't think I could find anything with the equipment and condition I would want under 25K if I were to replace it.

The first offer was actually 15K, then a minute later 16500.00 and stopped at 18K. Even if he calls me and offers 20 I don't think I'll sleep well at night if I sell it for 20.

I think you are on the right track, you have your answer, you would be sorry if you sold it unless it was likely $25,000 +++

LOL, thats exactly what my wife said to me yet I didnt listen and let my 68 Beaumont Convertible go and she never lets me forget that she told me so.

So just like everyone else said, if youre having doubts the youre probably not ready to let it go at any price less than a ridiculously high one!!  I can speak from experience.
