If you ever come across a swarm don't panic. It just means the queen has left a busy hive with most of her workers in search of a new home. The workers are so "high" on the scent of her pheromones that they really couldn't car less about you. I know beekeepers who have scooped up a swarm wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

So, do you get more, or less sensitive to stings over time?

I get stung at least once each year by a paper wasp. Seems to be worse every time. But I see beekeepers and the stings don't seem to bother them more than a mosquito bite. I can't recall ever being stung by a bee. Wasps & hornets, yes, but not an actual bee.

Not sure about hornet stings but yes, with bee stings you still feel the initial sting but after that you feel nothing. Some beekeepers say it helps their arthritis. There is still a risk that at some point you can become allergic to the venom. We always have Epipens with us when working the hives just in case.

Also be careful around bees, hornets etc if you take beta blocker blood pressure meds (or even take meds like Aspirin or Advil). They can make a sting very severe or even fatal. I was working bees while suffering from a gout attack about three years ago. I had taken an Advil for the pain. I got stung in my bicep area. My arm swelled up severely down to my hand. Was a bit worrysome..
