I wouldn't say tripled;
I have seen a steady increase in prices for 400's & 455's for well over a decade - I mean twenty years ago, finding a good 400 wasn't too hard, but 455's were pretty hard to come by;
These days you're lucky if you find a P350 - there's just about nothing out there that a guy like one of us hasn't already bought.

I sold my 455 last spring for about that much;
Earlier this past spring I sold my long term backup/spare 1972-400 (standard bore, original flat tops, looked to be a prime candidate for a "roadkill" style rebuild) for roughly that much too - the '72 shortblock was untouched, I included a set of 6x-4's, an intake matched to the heads, a good core 750cfm Quadrajet, and anything else the guy wanted to go with it to have a complete engine.

I now have two 350's that I am scratching my head on what I should do with, and three good 400's (none of which are for sale).

Machining costs are the real killer now;
There are less shops that can do the work, and as a result costs have gone up.
I personally know of two small machine shops that I have dealt with, which no longer exist.
