Wow, its nice to see one with the correct interior door panels and seat material! So many have incorrect Malibu interior and seat covering.

My mom bought a new Malibu 4 door sedan in 72. Of course me being a 15 year old I tried to talk her into one of these......

Nice car, but I am not a fan of the decal on the nose or dashboard.

According to the brochure it looks like it is correct to have a decal on the nose, but the font looks different, and definitely too large.  Also, comparing it to the brochure pic, the stripe is different, the car should have the base 14" rally-type wheels with the six squarish slots, no trim rings and 'special' wheel centres.  It also looks like there shouldn't be a Chevelle badge in the grille, and certainly not 350 badges on the hood.

I don't know enough about these cars to know whether the decal on the dash is correct - it certainly looks wrong (and I suspect it is), but the rest of the interior looks great (if you ignore those ugly speaker grilles on the deck).

With the statement that I don't know much about the minutia of these cars to know whether there were variations or mid-year changes that would make all this correct, it appears to be a 'restoration' that happened without much attention to detail.  That said, it looks nice (I like it), but for $31,000 I want all the details to be right on the money.

I was going to question the pricing, but it seems to be in step with how the rest of the old car market has gone crazy.  I mean, while the Heavy Chevy is a neat package, it was designed in concept to be a poser - a Chevelle coupe with sporty wheels and stripes to make it look like a muscle car, but without the muscle (a 307 was the base engine for this package).  All the companies were doing this in the early seventies as a reaction to the high insurance rates that were being charged to young people with muscle cars (for obvious reasons).  That said, it looks like it could be ordered with a 400 (402?) and a 4-speed, so you could definitely make it a poor man's SS if you ticked the right boxes on the option sheet.  It's definitely a cool relic of the era.

I used to think that low to mid 30s would be where a '72 Chevelle SS would be priced, but perhaps SS cars are now in the $50K range?  I dunno.

Yes the interior shouldnt have any reference to Heavy Chevy. It should just be the base model Chevelle interior. I know that the font for the decals was also too large, but I was really surprised to see the correct interior. If its a Canadian car I would like to see documentation of the heavy Chevy package. It was common for dealers to add the stripe kit to a base model that wouldnt sell. I remember years ago seeing the heavy Chevy stripes on a six cylinder Malibu!

Hemmings has a full description of what makes a Heavy Chevy. The 400 engine was the big block and no 454 was offered.

Here's something I didn't know. Some Heavy Chevy's were built at the Oshawa plant. There's a registry for these cars and here are the Oshawa examples in the registry:

Has a cowl hood which I remember seeing on a heavy Chevy. But would need the gm paperwork to prove it was original. I remember a new one from Richmond PEI, a dark green car.

Know that a friend, now deceased, from Timmins bought one at Calvert Motors in Iroquois Falls. It was his pride and joy as he babied it. Lost track of it after his death but do remember seeing it advertised not too long ago.
