Seems the Suez Canal authority has seized the Ever Given for payment for loss suffered. 1 billion dollars.

So how can that be? It was Suez employed pilots at the helm at the time of the grounding. Can anyone familiar with maritime law explain how this isn't extortion?

There has been controversy with the Suez Canal in the past. Egypt closed it in for almost ten years in the sixties into the seventies when at war with Israel. Its hard to tell what repercussions this ship seizure will have towards the Canal Authority. The ship is owned by a Japanese company. I wonder if they would have seized a Chinese or Russian owned ship?

You are probably right, they would never attempt a shakedown on China as most everything coming through originates there, they'd just send it all around the Horn out of spite and Egypt would suffer. Russia, maybe out of the fear of war.

Perhaps this is standard operating procedure in this industry. Hold the boat, aim super high, and accept a settlement much lower from insurance?
