Where and when was New Toronto?

Helping a neighbor clean out her house, found a package mailed from New Toronto, it contained a 3/8 copper rod about 4 ft long.

I wonder what the copper rod was for? A ground rod?

Her husband died 3 years ago, he was 80. He and his dad were electricity geeks, his father for a hobby repaired tube radios, had an original radio made before they had dials. The rod would have been bought by the father.

The father raced a Porsche and the son raced a lotus. The son had a mini welder in his van under the hood ran off his alternator. Ill post some pics of some of his gizmos.

New Toronto is a neighbourhood and former municipality in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located in the south-west area of Toronto, along Lake Ontario. The Town of New Toronto was established in 1890, and was designed and planned as an industrial centre by a group of industrialists from Toronto who had visited Rochester, New York. New Toronto was originally a part of the Township of Etobicoke. It was an independent municipality from 1913 to 1967, being one of the former 'Lakeshore Municipalities' amalgamated into the Borough of Etobicoke, and eventually amalgamated into Toronto. The neighbourhood has retained the name.

Oh dear, I'm late to this party and yes the wiki searchers have it. As one of the few Toronto born and bred posters plus being a former Municipal employee I had this, in fact up untill 1967 Toronto as we know it was comprised of too mumerous to mention small towns and townships. In 1967 the small towns were organized into 5 Boroughs and the City of Toronto as Metropolitan Toronto, Next came Megacity in 1998. What has not changed though is that may of theses original towns still exist, we just call them communities or neighbourhoods now.

You may know many of the more prominent ones like Yorkville, North Toronto, Mimico, Swansea, Parkdale, Riverdale, East York, Leaside, Moore Park, Forest Hill, Long Branch Weston, Agincourt, West Hill, Scarborough, York etc... all formerly towns or townships or unicorporated towns.

We don't hear New Toronto much anymore but anyone my age knows it is south Etobicoke along the Lakeshore to the west of the City proper. It is not uncommon to hear people refer to these town names even today, "We're heading down to Yorkville to have a drink at Hemingways" or "We've got a game tonight against the Agincourt Canadiens then Saturday we play the Flames in Leaside." I've got a Sunday 9:30 Tee Off at Lambton Golf and Country Club  in Weston."

I never heard of this name before, my first visit was in 1974, drove from Ottawa to Mississauga in a borrowed Audi Fox. The 401 traffic jam started then around Markham, now it starts around Kingston. Next trip was in February 1975, went to Niagara Falls on my honeymoon, it was frozen up pretty good. Drove in a 74 Vega, stayed in a hotel overlooking the falls. The hotel was fairly old and had a bed that vibrated if you put a quarter in the coin slot. Funny what memories these stories trigger.

You were too far north to pass through New Toronto on your '74 trip but if you were on Queen Elizabeth Way in Toronto you'd have driven through it in '75.

Great educational thread!  Thanks guys, I had never heard of New Toronto before, and it was fascinating to read on how it came about - I have a 'thing' for old industrial areas and their history.  I always find it cool when old industrial buildings are repurposed for more modern usage, though I'm not aware if this is the case in New Toronto.

It still shows up on Google maps, but it's interesting that I know people who live in Etobicoke and have even stayed there, but have never heard them referring to New Toronto before (they have lived there for decades) - I may have even been there without knowing it...

Always enjoy the side discussions here.

We just don't seem to use the New Toronto reference anymore at all, a close by town of Mimico is still used to describe the area along Western Lakeshore .

For car guys New Toronto was where Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Canada was located.

Here are some then and now shots.
