When I was a kid back in the sixties a friends father made a piston out of hardwood for his whippet. I didnt see it run but he did drive it for a few weeks with the wooden piston. Apparently it didnt have any piston rings on the wood piston, the thought was it would expand and seal better after it became soaked with oil!

A friend of mine drove a late '60s F**d Galaxy from "up north" Ontario south to Cobourg. It had a V-8 with only 7 functioning pistons and a block of wood wedged into the eighth. He said it ran okay.
