WARNING: Mopar (but interesting Canadiana) content.

Mark sent me this article as he know's I'm a fan of Mopars and Canadian automotive oddities.

1970 was the last year you could get a 340 in a Swinger.

However..never say never. The sales manager at Crosstown Motors in Edmonton had some pull with Chrysler as they were the largest volume dealer in Canada. The drag racing scene was popular in Edmonton and in '71 some guys still wanted a low priced performance Dodge. So.. with some persistence Crosstown managed to have a few "Swinger Specials" built in 71 and 72 with a 340.

Here's the website about these cars. Even if you don't like Mopars it's an interesting read.

There was also an article about these cars in "Bone Stock Musclecars" magazine:

Funnily enough I know Cliff too, soI knew all about the special Canadian Swingers., Bob makes a good point, Cliff is a talented atrtist and his T shirt designs are great. Canadian PPoncho content would be awesome.

I suggest that if you haven't got this mag, get it ... lots of Canadian Pontiac content. The owner/publisher is rebuilding/modding a early '62 Strato Chief.

Agreed.  It's a good magazine, and with the way print media is going these days we should all subscribe to it to help support it.

Regarding Swinger 340s, my brother had a 1970 back in about '76 and a good friend bought a '70 from the original owner back in the '80s (still has it).  My brother's was Sublime green with automatic, buckets and console (chrome slot wheels) and my friend's is GreenGo and was originally a bench seat 3-speed manual car (he put in a 4-speed but kept all the 3-speed stuff).  I can attest to the fact that those engines punch above their weight class, and tend to pull harder as you get higher into the rpms.  Apologize for the Mopar talk, but most here know I'm not very brand-centric, despite working for an OEM for several years.

These Canadian specific cars are cool in that they were never really supposed to exist in Chrysler's grand scheme of things.  I had thought the cut-off for Swinger 340s was 1970, after which the 340 package was moved to the Demon and later Dart Sport models, but the old car hobby has taught me that you can never say never.  Especially true for the Chrysler Corp., as they were smaller and perhaps hungrier than GM and FoMoCo.  Not sure if that's actually the case, but there seems to have been a lot more oddities that came out of Chrysler than the other brands - like if it were feasible to build it in their factories, and you wanted to go to the trouble of ordering it, they would do it (Hemi 4-door cars, for example).
