I saw a really nice Canadian '72 Lemans today

I was with my family doing a parade of garage sales in another member of this forum's neighborhood today when I spoke to a really nice genetlman about his '72 Lemans;
First I was half-surprised that I guessed the year;
Apparently this guy was the original owner of the car, and I was caught off gaurd when he popped the hood to reveal a small block(!);

Now, I must take pause, I KNOW about Canadian Pontiac's, but to me they are synonymous with Paresienne's, Acadian's or Beaumonts... and to a lesser degree Astre's and Canadian rebadged Pontiac Chevettes - I forgot that Lemans's were Canadian and USA built.

I identified this as a '72 by the split grille, but asked the owner if he was aware of if there was any way to tell a Canadian Lemans from a USA Lemans - to which he (righfully replied) "blue block versus orange block";

Are there any other way's to ID a Canadian market car from a USA market car?

I saw the 350 badge on the rocker panel, and assumed a Pontiac 350-2bbl, and asked him if it was "still a 2 barrel" - at which point he popped the hood, and I stopped myself from saying more.
Now for USA-Pontiac's the 350-4bbl was a 68-69 & 1975, then 1977 option, then it was gone again. (I could be wrong about it's absence for 1976, but understand it wasn't available for 1976 on the Firebird, so I have assumed that was a full model line thing).

Was the Chev 350 offered with a 4 barrel carb on cars like this between 1970 & 1974?
(if so, I was plain lucky at guessing it was originally a 2bbl car)

I can't answer all of your questions, but from the brochure, it looks like both Chevy and Pontiac 350s were offered in Canadian market LeMans for 1972, both with two barrel carbs.

That brochure page is interesting;
I can totally understand why some Canadian buyers were miffed at thinking they were getting one engine type, but instead recieved another.

I am genuinely surprised that the Chev engine had both higher hp, and higher torque ratings;
I find that a bit tought to believe.

Interesting - i wonder if there was any pricing difference for the Pontiac 350s vs the Chevy engines

My cousin is working on getting a 71 tempest for sale ( his son's car ) From what he tells me it has a chevy 350

I have never seen the car but might have to find an excuse to go look at it.

I'm a little surprised by what I'm reading here but nonetheless will tell you that pricing was no different, not all models were built in Canada so if a car you wanted was built in Pontiac you got a blue engine. A perfect example is the Nose job LeMans in 1972, never built in Oshawa so it had to come from Pontiac. Same for Convertibles  not built here. Even some Luxury LeMans or certain optional equipment had to be sourced from Pontiac. So you could have a Canadian bought and sold car with a blue engine but overwhelmingly they were Chevy here. The 350 2bbl, by far the most common V8. Another way to spot a 72 is the chromed front valance.

I saw the pronounced double horizontal bars in the middle of the grill, and (correctly) guess it to be 1972 from that.

Good eye, the 72 was a carry over due to a strike, what we know as the '73 was supposed to be the 72. Would have been interesting to see a 73 without Federal Mandated crash bumpers.
