(Victoria,Australia) - EV owners told to send in odometer readings for road tax, and they are not happy

https://thedriven.io/2021/06/30/victoria-ev-owners-told-to-send-in-odometer-readings-for-electric-vehicle-road-tax/

"EV owners in Victoria will be slugged a tax of 2.5 cents per kilometre from July 1,

meaning an annual bill of $375 for cars that travel around 15,000kms a year,

but around $750 a year for electric cars that travel double that.

Any EV owner who does not comply with the request risks

having the car registration cancelled or suspended, or something else.

"Failure to comply may result in your vehicle registration being suspended

or cancelled, or other penalties," the letter from VicRoads reads."

That seems about right. The rate is debatable but the principle is sound. If you use the roads you should help pay for them.  How they will make sure those owners don't lie is another story.

Thats probably cheaper than the equivalent annual road tax from gasoline or diesel. As electric cars become more popular I can see the same happening here.

Not very woke, though. Same in Tennessee - Tesla (and other EV owners) get hit for a fee when they renew their registrations, because they dont pay fuel taxes.

One of the the wisest things I was ever told that actually stuck in my head was that fact that there is no free lunch.

That's reality.

Got that right! Don't expect a free lunch either.

I read not too long ago Sask is going to charge EV owners $350/year.

I can't imagine anyone balking over a road tax if they understand how gas taxes work.  What would make it more difficult would be the lump sum payment rather than the bunch of little payments we currently make without thinking about it much.

As long as it wasn't brought on as a surprise tax that people weren't expecting, it seems completely reasonable.  You can plan for the payment in advance and save up for it, or if you're like the rest of us, just complain when it comes due and you make your payment...

Remember a lot of them are lefties and think they are saving the planet. In reality right now they are, at least in the main, recharging the cars from fossil fuel. If they were recharging them from dedicated renewable energy then maybe they may have a leg to stand on in that regard.

It makes sense though, most road taxes come from fuel excise. EV owners should pay their share in some way, shape or form.

And our old cars are kinder to the planet - because the damage done to make them was far less in the first place - and, if we keep them going, we don't repeat the process by buying new ones that also need exotic and rare elements.

I'm standing by for a barrage of criticism..........................................

You are correct I think. Keeping an older car going for the rest of your life almost certainly generates far less CO2 than recycling it for a new one. The Carbon required to build a new car is a significant amount.

Just the act of recycling generates a lot of pollution and uses energy, so I always say it's better for the environment to keep an old one on the road.  That's not a scientific study, mind you, and I am a bit biased... wink
