Darn it, that hurt !

Just got in from cutting the grass and I was sitting here reading some old posts biggrin

And then something stung me under my shirt.

I slapped right away and killed it.

Scooped it up off the floor and took it out to the deck to try to figure what the ----- was it !

Turns out to be this,

Beware the Kissing Bug Bite

Assassin Bug: The Kind of Insect You Want in Your Garden

Welcome the insects that eagerly gobble up the pests that prey on your favorite plants.

Assassin Bugs 101: The Bugs You'll (Definitely) Want In Your Garden (bobvila.com)

Are Assassin Bugs Poisonous or Dangerous?

Beware the assassin bug! Beneficial as they may for protecting your garden plants, these critters may attack and bite humans and animals, even if unprovoked, piercing the skin with that sharp beak. Though painful and likely to cause swelling at the site, for the most part an assassin bug bite rarely requires medical attention.

My swelling is gone but wound is still sore.

I was waiting for Todd to chime in about being stung all the time biggrin

I have had lots of be stings in the past and nothing compares to what this guy did.

When you see a bee, you stay away.

We see these things all over the place and don't realize what they can do.

Honey bees and bumble bees are not aggressive unless you disturb their hive. In fact we have bumble bees living under our rear porch step and they don't bother us at all. Even if you come across a swarm of honey bees don't fret. They are so "high" on the queen's pheromones that I've seen beekeepers scoop up a pile of them without being stung. I haven't been stung since 2016 since I now manage the honey operation and don't work with the bees anymore.

Weve had bees living in our garage soffit for years. Never been an issue. But now that Ive tearing apart a nearby deck, Im thinking the vibration must be making them play both defence and offence. There was also a nearby wasp nest that might have put the bees on edge. I took out the wasp nest, so well see what happens.
Good luck with your bite.

That will alleviate a lot of the problem.

While we are talking about swellings ... DO NOT TOUCH HOGWEED! I've been dealing with a swollen, sore, burnt right hand for 6 weeks now.

Ouch. Gotta be careful around Hogweed! Bees LOVE hogweed flowers and the resulting honey smells like wet dog fur and tastes like sh*t.

Yikes!  Try to keep it out of the sun if possible (almost impossible this time of year).

"When giant hogweed (GH) sap, which contains photosensitizing furanocoumarins, contacts human skin in conjunction with sunlight, it can cause phytophotodermatitis - a serious skin inflammation. In brief, the sap prevents your skin from protecting itself from sunlight which leads to a very bad sunburn."

Was the hogweed on your property Darryl? I think the PEI Gov't wants people to report it and they'll come and destroy it.

I couldn't find any on our property. I was actually in several woodsy locations the day that I got it.
