'Muscle Cars; Bone Stock & Modified' (summer 2021)

I seem to recall seeing this publication for a while, but it seems to of late gotten ALOT better in it's articles, so I bought two recent issues.

The latest has a story on a '67 Grand Parisienne and mentions this site.

But it's not that car that prompted me to come here to make a "Canadian" (albiet non-Poncho) post.

The real story that piqued my interest, and prompted me to buy it was of the Carousel Red, err, Hugger Orange '70 Camaro SS 396.

It's a one owner car that is pretty cool in my books;
But it got me thinking;
I never read of 1970 SS 396 Camaros - so I just looked it up and found this: https://nastyz28.com/camaro/camaro70.html

According to that site, there were only 2,646 SS 396 cars built - wow that's alot lower than I would have thought!!

I have always seen the SS 396 cars as the Camaro equivalent to my Firebird;
but while there were 7,709 1970 Formula 400's - which in and of itself is considered a rare car these days, that makes the SS 396 cars incredibly rare.

Now my Canadian tie-in;

For those of you who recognize my yammerings, you may recall that when I introduced myself, I said that my car is a Winnpeg car that I got in the summer of 1995;
What I hadn't mentioned is some of the early stuff about my car;
When I got it the (female and male sides of the) shoulder belts were MIA, but I procured a set from a local dismantler;
I don't know if it still exists (I am kind of doubting it, but just looked on Google maps, and my suspicions seem to be founded) - it was called 'Midnight auto', and you followed Springfield Road all the way to the end, turned the corner, and a little way down, it was on the east side of the road - it looks like 'Metals in motion inc' is now there;
Anyway - I was stumped by the picked clean carcass of a 1970 Camaro that I pulled these belts from - the emissions tag read "400cid" - and to me, I interpreted that as the small block 400 cid "truck" engine - only later did I realize that the tag meant that the car was originally an SS 396 car.

Now I ask this because of (what seems to me) to be a high number of Winnipeggers on this site;
Does anyone remember 'Midnight Auto'?
(it may have been spelled 'Midnite Auto')

Does anyone know if that (SS) 396 Camaro was ever pulled from the yard and brought back to life?

What year was the 402 called the 400? The 1971 only?

 If I understand Colvin (Chevy by the Numbers) correctly the 400 produced 1970 thru 1972 is a small block.

All 396 engines 1970 thru 1972 were actually 402 cid. I read somewhere or just a case of bad memory that some

big block (396) engines were referenced as 400 cid engines but cannot confirm this.

the emission sticker on that 1970 Camaro which read 400cid, was what I later learned meant it was a "396" (402ci) car.
The small block 400 was never installed in a Camaro;
There may be a non-truck application that I am unfamiliar with, but I can be sure it wasn't put in a Camaro - especially a 1970 Camaro.

Oh, and I could be wrong, but the early camaro (molded plastic) jack cover I have may have also come from that car...

It's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that I have had this car now for just over twenty-six years.

 Hmmmm...that may be where I read the 400 meaning 396/402....smile

Yes, also in the full size cars too. The 402 had 400 engine badges.

Bone Stock magazine has been around for 6 years and every issue has a Canadian Pontiac either mentioned or featured.

The owner (Terry Denomme) is actually building up a '62 Strato Chief and has posted on this website. This website has been mentioned many times in the magazine.

Glad I subscribed early on, because many of the paper issues are now out of print. I sound like I own stock in the companywink, but I do like the magazine.

Yes this place is still in operation  under the name of Midnight auto -  it has been my experience that the owner is quite knowledgeable in the contents of his yard and whether he still has a certain car in stock

in terms of your question as to whether the car has been restored there is a Manitoba Camaro club you can reach out to

I remember that the owner was quite knowledgeable in his cars;
Since I know nothing about that Camaro, I would think that he is the only person to know if the car was saved.

Can you share any info on the relocated business?

I haven't been to Winnipeg in a while, but if his cars are anything like what he used to have, it would be something I'd like to check out.

That was by a wide margin, the best yard in Winnipeg to look for parts for classics.

 i would be very surprised if he has relocated - he was still in his same location when when I did a quick stop by this past spring-  i just visited the office -i i didn't have time to go into the yard
