That does sound like the MAF sensor. The code coming back right away shows that its a hard fault, the sensor is out of range.

Well I guess the saying "When you assume you make an a**....." holds true. The new MAF didn't fix the issue. I had a feeling it wouldn't when I removed the old MAF and realized it wasn't an orig GM. I suspect someone has been tracking this issue before. The engine stumbled and the light returned right away. The Snap On scan tool shows the same code which is a 325 ESC Fault. The scan tool does some troubleshooting and allows me to monitor some sensor readings. It was the scan tool that showed the MAF to be the most likely issue for this code and then listed about 10 other possible reasons. My next step will be to verify the MAF is getting 12 v and ground and creating a signal. Having a shop manual sure would help and especially wiring diagrams. Since my son is here only until Monday I'm not going to spend a bunch of time digging into the issue until he heads home. It also has older fuel in it. I added a couple of gallons of premium fuel and let it run for a while. I still haven't licensed the car yet as I was hoping to get the issue sorted first so I can't really take it on a good run with fresh fuel.

Add a good load of sea foam to the tank Todd, helps with old fuel and cleans up varnish in the valves etc. A good highway run of say 100 kph for an hour will help. If you lived here, Id have said 120.

i did have this problem in my 93 olds cutlass and the culprit was the throttle positioning sensor it was kinda gummed up as it is in the coolant i removed it cleaned it and voila may be worth a try on a lighter note a bought a new stator for my boat 300 bucks and it did not fix the no start issue LOL

I called the seller's son to get some background on this idle and lack of power issue. It started about 3 years ago. MAF was replaced. Their mechanic thought it was PCM and replaced it- no change. Later when Dad was away he did some more checking and found a mouse nest in the exhaust - all kinds of crap blew out when they revved it. He said before this it wouldn't idle at all. They also found some nest material in the air box and cleaned it out. I'm wondering if there's still a blockage in the exhaust.. or if a mouse has chewed a harness. He said their mechanic (who is supposed to be "quite good") checked the wiring and found nothing wrong.
Once I have time to really dig into it I'll check the throttle body for any obstructions and may even drop the exhaust and see how it runs etc etc
