Lifter clatter ?, then it's completely gone. Hmm. Question.

Today after a brief burst up to redline through the gears in the 67, when I slowed back down, about a minute or two later while cruising a tick appeared and became pretty loud. Enough to be concerned, but not bad enough to stop. You could hear that it sounded a little different through the exhaust as well. Pretty sure it was a lifter or rocker sound. After a few kilometers it slowly went away (to my immense relief). Oil pressure never changed and I'm getting 60 at 2500. 20 at Idle. 10/30 VR-1. Engine was cool at 170 today.

It's never done this before, always been very quiet. The only difference is an oil change a month or so ago. It's a 496 with a Straub cam, Morel hyd roller lifters, aluminum heads and Comp rockers.

Time to check the lash perhaps?  Any ideas?

Thanks, Mark

I had valve noise and it turned out to be the hardened tips on the old pushrods chipping and galling away!

I suspect you used better parts in your build but thats what I found in mine

ordered some new higher quality pushrods and my problem is gone now.

Thanks Greg. Either way the valve covers will need to come off. They've never been off since the build in 2016.

The fact the sound went completely away leads me to think a lifter ended up collapsing enough to allow clearance, and pumped back up down the road. Either way, not nice for the roller, cam or rocker tip.

Well it is good that it went away. I did much the same thing a few years ago with my Corvette and its 350. Took a good run up to the red line and after finishing the drive I had a tick. It wasn't going away and I had to come back from Edmonton with it like that. Turned out I had a broken valve spring. Quick fix as they just charged the cylinder and swapped it out while on the engine.

I had it back out tonight for a run. It sounds normal underhood, but strangely, the exhaust tone sounds different somehow. Still goes like stink when prompted, so no noticeable reduction in output.

I have read about some junk lifters, springs, push rods, and rockers being built in recent years. Do a search online for the part numbers you used amd see how f anything pops up. Cams too, and Comp components were included. Im in no way a knowledgeable in engine parts, only repeating what I have read from some very knowledgeable engine builders.

Yes, I've read quite a bit about defective or even counterfeit lifter horror stories as well Don. My Morel street rollers were bought directly from Straub Technologies, who at the time promoted and stood firmly behind this brand. I even spoke to Chris Straub directly. So I figure (and hoped ) that I wasn't one of the unlucky ones. 5 years on without an issue, along with quite a few big pulls, I think I have good parts, and I spent a huge amount of time getting the rocker geometry right. But things do wear, and this was a roller retrofit into a vintage BBC after all.

I'm hoping it was just an anomaly. Maybe a piece of trash temporarily blocked the lifter orifice?

It's always nice to look back at the old build images though..

Could your noise may have been a piece of carbon that broke loose and then broke up and passed out through the exhaust?

No, definitely a metallic rattle. Actually, at first I thought maybe a header gasket.

Deep pan. I think I have 6 1/2 liters in it. I'll check it.

Just talked with someone who had a noise in his hellcat in a Durango. Had a noise, dealer said nothing wrong several times. Had a real mechanic say it was a failing lifter, dealer said bring it back in. It blew up on the way there.

My 454 is very sensitve to oil level and after not being used especially. I get the same problem from time to time Mark, Always goes away with a top up of seafoam. I've been avoiding tearing into it.
